What does the Granger name mean?
English and French: occupational name for a farm bailiff, responsible for overseeing the collection of rent in kind into the barns and storehouses of the lord of the manor. This official had the Anglo-Norman French title grainger, Old French grangier, from Late Latin granicarius, a derivative of granica ‘granary’.  (Grange) (Source:  Ancestry.com)

This is the home page for the history and genealogy of my Granger family.  The main surnames included are:  GRANGER, ADAMS, HANCHETT, KENT, FROST, MARKHAM, SIMONS, MCNITT, CARPENTER, EDMONDS, EXTANCE, SHUTES, PHELPS, KNAPP, LEE, WINTER, MARSH, AUSTIN, AND SIPLE.

Anyone with Granger roots is welcome to submit data, information on Granger family books and web sites, or anything else pertaining to our family and its allied surnames.  Please feel free to contact me about any additions, corrections or suggestions.

I am dedicating this Granger web site to Evelyn Mae Granger Crowson, who was my mother, friend, ally and role model.  Evelyn gave unconditionally of her time and love, especially when it came to family.  I believe she would have been thrilled to find out the history of the Granger family, and especially thrilled to know of her ancestors.  My mother would have cherished the good and laughed away the bad!

History of the
Launcelot Granger Family

The following is a summary of what I believe to be correct about the early Launcelot Granger family.  I have used the sources noted at the end.  I am always open to changes, so please let me know if you find errors or additions - with the documentation you have used.  For those of you who are just beginning your Granger research, this history is not meant to be a primary source for your data.  Hopefully, it will be of interest and a good starting point.

Launcelot Granger, the son of Launcelot Granger of Shellington, England, came to America from England about 1648.  He settled in Ipswich, Mass.  It is thought that he returned to his home in England to settle his mother's estate, returning to Newbury with the financial means to marry and build a home.  He then removed to Newbury, Mass. in the Massachusetts Bay colony.  On January 04, 1653/54, Launcelot married Joanna Adams, the daughter of  Puritans, Robert Adams and Eleanor Wilmot Adams.   Launcelot and Joanna lived at Kents Island, Newbury, Mass., where they had eleven children.  These children were John, George, Robert, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Dorothy, Hannah, Samuel, Mary, Abraham and Thomas.

In 1674, they removed to Suffield, Conn., where they were allotted land, living in a house on High Street.  He was land measurer in Suffield for several years, and held other public offices.

In 1676, Launcelot was wounded by the Indians in King Philip's War, receiving a ball in his leg, which he carried for life.  Launcelot Granger died on September 3, 1689 in Suffield, Conn.
