• Santo Domingo, 1785-1793: a successful planter and merchant, often in partnership with his father-in-law. He fled with his family during the 1793 slave uprising, eventually settling in Philadelphia in time to witness the inauguration of President George Washington. He built a business in the city where he remained for 25 years. He owned two country estates, published books of French poetry and established a newspaper called the American Bee.
