• He worked from 1870 to 1875 as a silversmith and watchmaker in Groton VT
Listed in the Vermont Business Directory, 1872, as a jeweler and watchmaker, but may have only been a merchant, possibly retailing goods manufactured by his brother John. By the 1880 census, he had taken up farming. ⁶
