    Dear Cousin Adaline

Years have elapsed since I have seen or heard from you The last interview I had with you was at Oswego in which I spent the happiest hours of my life Since that time you have been called to mourn the loss of Sister and Father. When I read the melancholy tidings of Laura's death I really was more deeply affected but the bright evidence it gave of a hope in heaven seemed to disarm death of every sting I involuntary exclaimed let me die the death of the righteous let my last end be like hers, Your fortitude must have been tried but the loss of a parent must cause grief the most acute that mortals can experience resignation under such circumstances would seem hardly possible still it becomes us to submit cheerfully to the sways of providence. I hope Adaline you will not give your self up to sorrow and gloom It has been my intention [to] visit Clinton in Fall but the prevailing sickness and other circumstances have prevented me I am next week to commence work in the prison. Munger and Benedict have contracted for manufacturing clocks by Prisoners and I am to take charge business which will keep me much confined, but I suppose you would like to hear a word from our family. We are well Lewis and Alonzo are Married Franklin is in Alabama he has been practicing in the Mexican province the year past Henry reading law, I am yet single an entirely free from any thing like an engagement as much so as I was 30 years ago I have understood from some source that you were to be married but to whom I did not ascertain I hope you will write and tell me all about it I really am anxious to hear from you Adeline, please remember most respectfully to aunt and all the family whilst I remain your true friend and cousin Asher Markham jr
