- Apprenticed about 1829 to Jeremiah Dewey in Elizabethtown, Herkimer, NY
His training was interrupted by the family's move to Detroit about 1830.
- He worked from circa 1836 to 1837 as a jeweler in Perrysburg Wood OH
- He worked from circa 1838 to 1843 as a jeweler in Fort Wayne IN
- He worked from 1843 to 1860 as a jeweler and watchmaker in Sandusky OH where he supplimented his business with real estate speculation and winemaking. By 1861 the latter had become his primary occupation.
- He appeared on the 1850 census taken at Sandusky OH, listed as a watchmaker.
