  Events in his life were:

  • Described by Willis in History of Portland, as "originally a jeweller, but afterwards engaged in trade ... a handsome, gay, and accomplished man, but his misfortunes by losses of property and children, unthroned reason from her seat. . . ." The Journal of Rev. Thomas Smith refers to "John Butler, a silversmith by trade, a very respectable citizen before the Revolution, but later known in modern times as Crazy Butler." 3
  • He worked from circa 1755 to 1761 as a silversmith and jeweler in Boston MA 3
  • Advertised in the Boston News-Letter (Boston MA), 30 Nov 1758, "John Butler, goldsmith, at the corner of Clark's ship yard, Boston, has been robbed of stone and grape gold rings, silver buckles, etc." 3
  • He was a partner from 1761 to 1765 with Paul Little in Falmouth ME as BUTLER & LITTLE 3
  • He worked after 1765 as a silversmith in Falmouth ME had shop on India Street at the head of Preble's Wharf. Cumberland County Deeds records Jabez Bradbury of Falmouth selling land to John Butler, goldsmith, in 1772. 3
  • He worked from 1778 to 1793 as a silversmith in Gorham ME 9
  • He worked from 1793 to 1800 as a silversmith in Falmouth ME 9
  • Advertised in the Boston Independent Chronicle (Boston MA), 10 Mar 1795, "To be sold at Falmouth, Casco-Bay, a house lot likewise a complete sett of Goldsmith's Tools suitable for large work." Joseph Holt Ingraham bought the proberty for $500 on 01 July 1800. 3
  • He worked from 1801 to 1813 as a merchant and real estate speculator in North Yarmouth ME
