• He worked from circa 1727 to 1767 as an engraver in Boston MA
Comparisons of his engraved prints with designs found on Boston silver suggested he did work for several silversmiths. He is known to have engraved a copperplate for printing clock dials for Preserved Clapp. The watchmaker Gawen Brown shared shop space with Johnston between 1749 and 1752. ⁷
