Silversmith

  Events in his life were:

  • He worked after 1819 as a silversmith in Palmyra NY
  • A prominent merchant, abolitionist, and early leader in the cause of women's rights. He was advertising his shop wares as early as 1819. Along with Stephen Ackley and Benjamin Throop, he was Palmyra's first Fire Warden, nominated early in 1828. Later that same year, in May, he and other town leaders organized Palmyra's first fire company. He built a home on East Main Street in 1827 that later served as a stop on the Underground Railroad (it still exists and is used as a law office today). In 1850 he served as a delegate to the first women's rights convention in New York City and was named to the governing board. In later life, he was a substantial benefactor to Palmyra charities and civic groups. In 1843 he and G. W. Cuyler founded a bank later run by his son, Pliny Titus Sexton, who underwrote many real estate developments in the town

Pliny married Margaret Turner on 2 Jan 1822 in Palmyra NY. (Margaret Turner was born about 2 Aug 1797, died on 27 May 1831 in Palmyra NY and was buried in Palmyra Vienna Street Cemetery Palmyra NY.)
