Preserving some of the local history of the people of the Native tribes living along the Klamath River and its tributaries following the Gold Rush has been a life-long project of mine. The influx of thousands of miners from all over the world and a short time later the influx of homesteaders for free lands in the West, brought about sudden changes in the lives of those Indian families. "That any Indians survived is testimony that abhourrent conditions can produce courage and strength in people, a tribute to the persistence of humankind", a quote from the last page of Albert L Hurtado's "Indian survival on the California Frontier".
Following is a few of the studies of surviving families coming about from interviews with descendants, researching through internet collections of census pages and voting registers, as well as BIA files when available is the basis for these stories. Hazel Davis Gendron

- Florence Harrie, Karok Indian basketweaver, continues the artistry developoed centuries before the arrival of the white man in the secluded Quartz Valley which is her home in Siskiyiyou County. Willows, hazel sticks, pine roots, porcupine quills and ferns are her raw materials with alder bark and moss used to dye the materials rich browns and yellows. Under quickly moving fingers the water soaked materials are woven into baskets, water jugs, hats and cradle baskets in which the Indian babies are carried. by Richard K. Chemawa Indian School enrollment book
This is 2 pages from the, that I acquired while researching my own family.
There are several names listed from northern California and Oregon.Page One Page Two
1934 Indian Census
These pages were given to me by a friend. They are from
book of a 1934 Indian Census. She photocopied them, but did
not write the name of the book down, so the only information
that I have on this is what is at the top of the pages...
"Census of the Siskiyou and Trinity Indians taken by
O.M. Boggess". Due to the fact that some of these people
are still living, I have crossed out their roll numbers.
Some of the photocopies were off centered, so some of
the information on some of the pages was cut off.Page One (top) Page One (bottom) Page Two (top) Page Two (bottom) Page Three (top) Page Three (bottom)
