Title: Death by Mining Accident
Type: DiedCause
Place: USA, Utah, Carbon, Scofield
Description:
SMITH, James was working in the Winter Quarters Mine in Scofield, Utah. He had a date to take a young girl to a dance the night of August 11, 1905 and he was in a hurry to get done with work. As he was taking the last coal car out of the mine, the car tipped as he rounded a bend in the mine shaft. Normally he would have been riding on the back of the car, but in his haste, he somehow ended up on the side of the car. When the car tipped, it pinned him between the coal car and the side of the mine. He was cut in half at the abdomen. His father, SMITH, Andrew, was already home in Scofield when he heard the news that his son had been injured. Family stories claim that, to get to the mine as quick as possible, SMITH, Andrew walked over the mountain between Scofield and the mine, instead of walking up the valleys.
