Editor's Comments:
Jens Jensen served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Denmark Mission. This portrait was taken while he was on that mission in Denmark. Jens is standing on the right. We believe that the man on the left is a mission companion, but we are not sure. While in Denmark, Jens met with several of his family members, and had studio portraits taken with them, so this could be an unidentified family member.
He arrived in Denmark on February 14, 1889 and preached in the same areas where he had grown up: Nim, Hvirring, Horsens, Skanderborg, and Velje.
Jens returned home setting sail from Copenhagen on September 13, 1890, then from Liverpool on September 20, 1890 aboard the Steamship Wyoming with 197 Saints, including a number of returning missionaries of which he was in charge. They arrived in New York harbor on October 1, 1890 and in Salt Lake City on October 9, 1890.
During the early part of 1890, while still in Denmark as a missionary, Jens was working as President of the Aahrus Conference. One of his duties was to help Saints prepare their emigration papers. During this time, a young girl named Marina Anine Nielsen came to Jens and expressed a desire to emigrate to the United States. She had been baptised on January 1, 1889, after being introduced to the Gospel by her brother Adolph. Jens helped her organize her papers, and she ended up traveling to the United States with the same group as Jens. Jens and Marine were married shortly after their arrival in Salt Lake City.
