(The following information, by the Town of Canton historian Edward F. Heim, was made available to me by Martha ("Marti") Olin Ciferri, Lake Placid (olinorigin@yahoo.com). Marti found this material in the Saranac Lake public library, and very generously provided me with a great deal of additional information on Olin Cemetery. She is very involved with Olin genealogy and welcomes any correspondence you might have regarding the Olin family).

We have recorded 164 stones and monuments with names, dates etc.,
There are a number of sunken graves, many with no identification.
The following work was done under the supervision of Edward F. Heim, Town Historian, during the week of August 3rd and 10th, 1964. We had seven men assigned by the county Welfare Department to help with the heavy work of straightening stones, cleaning monuments and filling holes. Dirt provided by Town Highway Commissioner Rexford and other equipment also by Mr. Rexford. Mr. Whalen and Mr. Stadler of the Witherbee & Whalen Monument Co. of Canton also helped with suggestions and necessary equipment. Fences were repaired and the entrance gate, restored and fastened.

The Rev. Mr. Underwood of the Canton Baptist Church, turned over to the Town Historian a map of the Olin Cemetery made September 10th 1881. Copies filed with Mrs. Smithers, the County Historian and with Richard Myers of Canton, NY.
In July 1964, plans for the work to be done on the Olin Cemetery were discussed with Mr. Underwood, Roy Clark, Dwight Church & Spencer Morris. They in turned discussed the matter with their church Parishioners and a letter dated July 30th, 1964 and signed by Mrs. Thelma Waite Clark states: The members of the First Baptist Church held a business meeting last evening and voted to turn over to the Historical Society the Olin Cemetery, about which you and Rev. Underwood have had previous discussion.

EDWARD F. HEIM AUGUST 28TH, 1964
Historian,
Partial history of Olin family, Olin Settlement and Cemetery.
In 1801, Jonathan Day and his Brother-in-law, Thomas Olin came from Vermont and settled in the area known as the Olin Settlement, located about five miles from Canton, New York on the Sykes Road.
The following year, they returned to Vermont and shortly after, they brought their families back to the Olin Settlement. Later other members of the Olin and Day families followed them to St. Lawrence County.
A school house was built and at one time seventy-five of the ninety children were members of the Olin and Day families, or branches thereof.
Church services were held in private homes until the School was built and later most of the group attended services at the Baptist Church in Canton, NY.
The most famous member of the Olin family group was CALEB OLIN. He was born in Warwick, Rhode Island on Dec. 8th, 1753. Later he settled at Shaftsbury Vermont, where he operated a farm. He is described as over six feet tall and weighing 300 pounds. He served during the Revolutionary War, as a member of the Green Mountain Boys, under General Green, his idol. Caleb Olin was very strong and the only member of the Army
who could lift a comparable weight was General Green. Caleb Olin held the rank of Ensign under Captain Galusha, who later became Governor of Vermont.
Caleb Olin was present at the evacuation of Ticonderoga and we have a completed copy of the Army Record in the files of the Town Historian. He was very active in locating Tories, many of whom found it desirable to move to Canada.
On Jan. 18th, 1775, Caleb Olin married FREELOVE MITCHELL of Block Island, Rhode Island. She was born on Nov. 21, 1755 and died July 4th, 1834. She is buried beside her husband in the Olin Cemetery at Canton, NY.
She mothered eleven children, all born before coming to New York State in 1814. Many of the children and grand-children are also buried in the Olin Cemetery.
Caleb Olin, died Aug 7th, 1838, at the age of 84 years and he is buried in the Olin Cemetery.
A complete history of the Olin Family is contained in the Olin Family Record of the
John Olin Ancestry written by C.C. Olin and contains material from 1678 to 1893. A copy is on file with the Town Historian in Canton, NY.
