Olin Cemetery--Town of Canton--CA055

Olin Cemetery is located on the Sykes Road between Canton and Madrid. Turn onto Riverside Drive (County Road 27) from East Main Street in Canton and a short distance out of the village bear right onto Sykes Road at the "Y" intersection. The cemetery is two miles from this intersection. The other end of the Sykes Road intersects County Road 34 near Buck's Bridge, and the cemetery is 3.8 miles from that intersection.

This cemetery is shown on the Morley 7.5 minute topographical map and is listed in GNIS. The coordinates for this cemetery are 44 38 40 North and 075 10 24 West.

There are approximately 200 burials in this cemetery and there were approximately 50 stones that I could not read (July 2000). (This is about 1/4 of the stones unreadable!). Many of the stones were on the ground and partially overgrown. The earliest burial I noted was Huldah Olin, died February 7, 1831, and the latest was Ida McDonald, died in 1926.

According to the book "Heroes of the American Revolution", published by the Nihanawate Chapter of the DAR, there are two Revolutionary War patriots buried here. One is Caleb Olin, born in 1753 and died in 1838, married Freelove Mitchell. (This information from the DAR book). I have included a photo of his grave with the original stone and with a military plaque also adjacent to the stone). The second patriot is Hezekiah Tuttle, and I did not find this stone, but it could very well be one of the many that are no longer legible. However, the stone for his wife, Lucy Tuttle was there. I suspect his stone was one of the many that were unreadable.
