Ellis Cemetery--Town of Stockholm--ST030

Ellis Cemetery is located on the Pleasant Valley Road, approximately one and 3/4 miles from the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road with State Highway 56 and this intersection is about halfway between Potsdam and Norwood. This cemetery is listed on GNIS and on the Potsdam 7.5 minute topographical map. The coordinates for this cemetery are 44 43 24 North and 074 57 20 West. This cemetery is still an active cemetery.

Cpl. Isaac Ellis, a Revolutionary War patriot is buried in this cemetery. (Unfortunately, his stone is broken and laying on the ground, but still readable). There also is a metal Ellis monument with Isaac listed on that. According to "Heroes of the American Revolution", published by the Nihanawate Chapter of the DAR, (and confirmed by his stones), Isaac was born in 1762.

There are two stone censuses for this cemetery. One was brought up to date to 1981, and was kindly given to me by a friend (author unknown). I have listed this census exactly as it was hand written. There were 271 people listed in this census. Also, there is the census that was generated by the digital photos that I took in Aug. 2000. There are approximately 225 names in this census, with 24 stones not readable and the earliest burial I recorded was that of Thomas H. Currier, on January 27, 1825. However, in the 1981 census there were two burials in 1813 (Gideon Ellis and Mercy Chase) and it appears that there were two Barton children (Charlotte O. and Harriet) that both died on August 7, 1818.
