John R. Sloyer 1821-1915; Sophia Emery 1822-1902. She became blind in her later years.
To this union were added four sons and four daughter.

They lived near Springtown, Bucks County, PA. John was a farmer, but devoted most of his time to cabinet making and the Undertaking Business. My grandfather helped him to make caskets. Two of the sons also were farmers, and one helped in the Undertaking Business. The other two followed their father in the cabinet work. One supervised in a planning mill. (NOTE: This implies 6 sons, Joyce Godfrey). The daughters were married to a farmer, a car inspector, a cabinet maker, and a carriage builder. The grandchildren are bankers, musicians, business executives, and the wives of such. Their youngest son is still living. (These four pages were originally given to Aunt Minnie in the 1950's.)

OBITUARY of Franklin SLOYER from unnamed KS paper, transcribed copy provided by Lynn SLOYER MOBLEY:

Franklin SLOYER died at the home of his son, E.F. SLOYER, on No. Main Street, Monday, January 15, 1917, after an illness of two weeks. He was born in Springtown, Bucks county, PA, Nov 5, 1838, and at the time of his death was 78 years old, two months and 10 days old.

On April 14, 1865 , he married Miss Henrietta FRANKENFIELD in PA. Since her death almost 20 years ago, he has made his home with his children. The last four months of his life was spent with his son, E.F. SLOYER and family.

He is survived by six sons and five daughters. They are: IM SLOYER, of Hartford, KS, J.M. SLOYER of Emporia, KS, EF SLOYER of Horton, KS, T.S. SLOYER of Winthrop, IA, W.D. SLOYER of Emporia, KS, S.E. SLOYER of Admire, KS; Mrs. Allen MESSINGER of Topeka, Mrs. Chas CAHILL of Horton, Mrs. M.O. NEWKIRK, and Mrs. B.F. ERNST of Tacoma, WA, Mrs. Ida HOCKNETTLE, Toledo, OH. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church, Wednesday, afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and internment was in the Horton cemetery. The pall bearers were six grandsons of Mr. SLOYER: Arthur W. SLOYER, Harry CAHILL, Alvin MESSINGER of Horton, Frank MESSINGER and Walter PHILLIPS of Topeka.

Comment on the photo, Joyce Godfrey:Randy contributed the picture, and as far as I know it was unidentified. I had dated it ca 1890 and Lynn asked I change that to ca 1887.
She has identified Edward Franklin as the young man seated on the left in the middle row. Franklin is next to him, then a daughter (I speculate Lillie), Henrietta, and another daughter (I suspect Stella). The boys in the front row would be (I think) Thomas, Samuel & William.
The back row is a mystery, although if Lynn is right on the approximate date of the picture I have a theory: left to right: Irving, Emma, John M., and Clara - Ida from Franklin's first marriage is missing. My theory is there was probably a family gathering around 1887 because Emma got married that year - I don't know if she was married in KS or OH. However, if she was married in KS the newlyweds might have returned for a visit. Ida is not present with the family in the 1880 Census, OH, Sandusky Co. - I assume she has already married. I don't think her connection to the Franklin/Henrietta marriage was as close as her brother Irwin. In the Bible pages Lynn sent from the Franklin/Henrietta Bible mention is made of Irwin but not Ida.

Henry SLOYER writes:
Franklin Sloyer 1838-1917
Anna Frankenfield 1840- 1863
Henrietta Frankenfield 1842- 1893

Franklin was married twice, having married sisters. There was one son born to the first union, Erwin Sloyer. His mother, Anna was only 23 when she died. Franklin then married Anna's sister Henrietta and to this union were born five boys and five girls. They were: John Mark, Clara, Emma, Edward F., Stella, Lillie, Thomas, William D., Samuel E. and Ida.

Franklin was a stone mason by trade and had lost one eye by a stone chip striking it. He moved from Easton, PA to Ohio and later to Kansas. Mr. Allen Messinger, who was married to the daughter, Clara, told me how one winter the then family lived with your family (this was written to Minnie Ache, Joyce Godfrey), that being the time I believe when your parents lost two children and Franklin also lost his wife. It was a real big family winter. If I am correct, he told me that there were 22 going to the table. The men were cutting wood at that time.

Linda Klosek states in 250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family 1752-2002 Franklin and Anna lived in Springtown, Bucks Co., PA. Franklin and Henrietta moved to Easton, PA then Fremont, Ohio in the fall of 1883 (note this is more likely 1873 considering the children place of birth). Before Christmas 1884 he left Forks and rented a 240 acre farm near Horton, Kansas. After two years he moved to Straight Creek, about 10 miles away and rented a farm of 160 acres. About 1893 they moved to Horton. Franklin was a farmer and stone mason his entire life. He lost an eye from a stone chip striking it.

In Memoriam

Henrietta SLOYER, nee FRANKENFELD, who left us for the spirit world on the 11th day of May, 1893, was 51 years, 4 months and 5 days old. She leaves a husband, 5 sons, 5 daughters and one step-son, who mourn her. She was born near Easton, Pa., and was married to Franklin SLOYER April 1, 1865. About nine weeks ago typhoid fever, which caused so much suffering and sorrow, first made its appearance.
Willie was the first to yield to it. Following him were Eddie, Estella, Lillie, Sammy, Tommy, Mother SLOYER, and at last a son-in-law, Mr. CAHILL. One of the scenes presented to the writer was as follows: in the parlor on her bed was Mother SLOYER, near the foot of the bed on a lounge was Tommy. Out in the sitting room was the daughter Estella, a young lady; to the left of her bed were Eddie, a young man and Sammy, a younger boy; in an upper chamber was Mr. CAHILL. Willie, Tommy, Sammy, Lillie and Mr. CAHILL recovered and were able to attend the funeral. Estella and Eddie are still confined to their beds.
Mother SLOYER rests from her labors in Oakwood. When the remains were carried into the room to permit the sick ones to look at mother for the last time upon this earth, it seemed as though their heart strings would break with grief; the congregation of mourners and friends were so overcome by the suffering condition of this family that it was a scene long to be remembered. On the morning of her death she requested her daughter to stay near her all day.
She was a good mother, a self-denying mother; never thinking about herseld, but always talking and hoping that her loved ones would recover.
The family wish in a public way to thank the friends for their kindness, sympathy and help in this their trying hour. By the pastor.

Betty Gross Riter, Springfield Township Historical Society, Bucks County, PA; 12/22/2009 writes: History: 174th Regiment Penna Infantry. A drafted militia, 2 companies. The 174th was a 9-month draft unit organized late October and early November 1862 in West Philadelphia. Companies H & I were from Northampton, the remaining companies were principally from Bucks County. Men were drafted from Springfield Township, Bucks County, October 16, 1862. The 174th served in the Army of the Potomac. In the latter part of November 1862, the regiment was ordered to Washington DC and then was ordered south to duty on fortifications and defenses at Suffolk VA where it reported to General Peck and was assigned to General Ferry’s brigade. On December 31, 1862, the 174th was ordered to duty at Newbern NC, arriving on 1-6-1863. When General Foster, with a part of the forces in North Carolina, was ordered to reinforce the army operating in front of Charleston, the 174th was included to reinforce the army and defend Charleston. The regiment boarded a transport, and sailing from Beaufort on January 27, 1863, reached Hilton Head on February 5, 1863. The 174th debarked and landed at St. Helena Island SC on 2-5-1863, staying in camp for three weeks, until 2-27-1863. The regiment then went to Beaufort SC for provost and garrison duty until June 1863, when it was transferred to Hilton Head SC. Towards the end of July, its term of service about to expire, it was ordered north to Philadelphia. The regiment was mustered out of service August 7, 1863. The group saw no action and their duty was routine.
Company A 174th Regiment Penna Infantry The men of Company A 174th Regiment were comrades and peers: John M. Nyce, Col., commanding officer. Jonathan L. Fackenthall, Captain.
