Ancestors on Board — Records of 30 million passengers on thousands of ships sailing to destinations worldwide.
Findmypast.com, in association with The National Archives, is proud to present ancestorsonboard, a new database featuring BT27 Outward Passenger Lists for long-distance voyages leaving the British Isles from 1960 right back to 1890. With ancestorsonboard, you can search for records of individuals or groups of people leaving for destinations including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and USA featuring ports such as Boston, Philadelphia and New York. Passengers include not only immigrants and emigrants, but also businessmen, diplomats and tourists. Images of the passenger lists are available to download, view, save and print.
The Ship List
DESCRIPTION: TheShipsList was established to assist those seeking

This is an excellent resource for learning where and how to research individual vessels. With good fortune you may find your vessel in this list. There are links to museums and archives. There is a description of sailing vessel rig types. The Palmer List of Merchant Vessels The histories of merchant vessels cover primarily American, British, and German sailing and steam vessels used for emigration in the 19th century.
Primary interest in 19th Century wood sailing vessel construction and operation with a particular interest in British North America (Canadian Martime).
Secondary interest in late 19th and early 20th Century maritime history in San Francisco Bay for all vessel types.
I have done an extensive search for copies of Lloyd’s List in U.S. libraries and the only U.S. library that *might possibly* have copies for the years in which you are interested is the Library of Congress, Serials & Government Publications Division. In fact, I am almost certain it does *not* have issues for 1854–1866, but the OPAC catalogue entries contain so little information it is difficult to tell for certain precisely what the LOC’s holdings of Lloyd’s List are. However, all LOC’s holdings of Lloyd’s List for which I am unable to determine a date are on microfilm, and the catalogue of the British Library Newspaper Library (the source for all of LOC’s microfilms of British newspapers) indicates no microfilm copies of Lloyd’s List for 1851-1913 (see my account of LLoyd’s List on the Mariners–L website. This book looks interesting for insights to the construction of wooden vessels.
This company built for the Royal Navy and the Honourable East India Company. For
both these customers, quality would have taken precedence over economics. BNA vessels
were built almost exclusively of green wood cut during the winter and used in the
summer. Oak was rare in the Canadian Maritimes and rare in Canadian vessels outside
of those built in Quebec where some native oak could be found. In the early 19th
Century, BNA vessels built for sale in Britain did not have a reputation for quality.
By mid century BNA vessels were quality built and had useful lives that approached
30 years using native unseasoned wood.
