This site has been developed with great thanks to Patti Strickler of Richardson, TX. [email protected] The only thing I knew about my Brownings was that my 2nd great-grandfather was John Wesley Browning, his wife a "German girl named Matilda",  and his daughter, Viola (Kate) was my great-grandmother.  I had his picture, his patent papers and the 1850 Coles Co., IL census showing them with a four year old named Alice. Then Patti answered a query of mine and everything fell into place.  Thank you, Patti!

1. JOHN 1 BROWNING was born Bef. 1775, and died in Ohio.

 Notes for JOHN BROWNING:

The Brownings are first found on the 1820 Harrison Co., Ohio census in Cadiz Twp. Samuel, William and John are all on same page of 1820 census, only 1 family living in between each of them. John is aged over 45 years, Samuel is 26-45 and in William's household are two males aged 16-25.

By 1830, they have moved further apart. William is in Tuscarawas Co., aged 20-30; John is in Harrison Co., Freeport Twp, aged 50-60 and Samuel is in Harrison Co., Moorefield Twp, aged 30-40. John disappears after that, but on the 1850 census, Samuel and William both say they were born in Maryland.

Descendancy is not proven, but from the preponderance of evidence, it is highly probable that he is the father of our Samuel.

He married (1) MARGARET MARKEE February 09, 1815 in Harrison Co., Ohio, daughter of JAMES ? MARKEE. She was born Abt. 1800 in PA, and died January 19, 1856 in Licking Twp., Crawford Co., IL. He married (2) SARAH ANN BELL March 01, 1857 in Crawford Co., IL3. She was born Abt. 1818 in NC.

p. 80, a continuation on a Robert McConnell whose son, John C. married Rachel Browning. "Samuel Browning, father of Rachel McConnell, d. in Athens Twp, (Belmont Co.?) 1864; served in the War of 1812; m. Margaret McKee, whose parents were natives of England; had issue: 1. Julia A.; 2. Elias; 3. Samuel; 4. Absolom; 5. Rachel; 6. Margaret; 7. Sarah; 8. Asbury T.; 9. Susanna; 10. Wesley; 11. Zara; 12. Edward.

From Patti: Samuel M. BROWNING, possibly a son of John W. Born in Maryland c1793. Married Margaret Markee on 12 Feb 1815. She was born c.1799 in PA. Samuel was a Democrat, a scout on the frontier, and served in the War of 1812 . He was a class leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Harrison Co. and removed to Crawford Co., IL, by 1852, when he purchases land.
