RESEARCH NOTES

The muster rolls and pay rolls represent two regiments:
June, July, Aug = 10th
Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec = 6th

The 10th Rgt. pay rolls = 3 months of pay

The 6th Rgt. pay rolls = 12 months of pay? A comment on Sept's says that 2 months are deducted. However, it appears by dollar amt. that 12 months total has been paid out.

No muster rolls or pay rolls exist in this group of records for the months of Mar, Apr, May of 1778 and January and February 1779, which would be needed to equal 12 months of pay based upon a draft date of Feb. 16th, 1778. This draft date was stated on the October pay roll form of the 6th rgt.

The Pay Roll for the 6th Regiment in October states in the comment section: Draughted in the 16th Feby & have only drawn September's pay. John Chesher is then paid 46-2/3 dollars (equal to 7 months which makes sense: Mar, Apr, May, June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct is 8 months and Sept is subtracted for a net amount of 7 months.) However, this conflicts with the comment section on the pay roll form for October which states that John has not been paid for any month except September. The John Chesher in the 10th Rgt. was paid for June, July, and August!

The total amount of pay represented by these records is for 15 months of service. Even if we deduct two months of pay if we interpret the confusing comment on Sept. Pay Roll to mean that the dollar amount on the pay roll form was deducted by two months, the total amount of pay would be for 13 months. The enlistment period was 12 months.

Oct 1778 - Muster Roll 1 Mo/Pay Roll 7 Mo (notation - drafted Feb, only drawn Sept) 6th Rgt

According to one researcher, Lt. Col Samuel Hawes was commander of the 10th Va. Reg't which, on Sept. 14, 1778, had a designation change to become the 6th Reg't.

These records belong to John Baptist Cheshire and agrees with his pension application dated May 16, 1829. He was born abt. 1753 and died August 10, 1836.
