Brown Family

The Chad Browne Family is one of the old and prominent families in Rhode Island. The well known four Brown Brothers
of Providence, R.I. (Nicholas, Joseph, John, and Moses) who were powerful businessmen, religious and social leaders in
the period before and up to the Revolutionary War are descended from Capt. James4 Brown (1698 - 1739) (Elder James3,
John2, Chad1 Browne). These four brothers helped found modern Brown University and are very distant cousins of mine.

The following outline of the Brown Family is from "Chad Browne of Providence, R.I., and Four Generations of his Descendants,"
by William Bradford Browne, NEHGS Register, 1926, pp. 73 - 86, and pp. 170 - 185.

Chad Browne immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts on the ship "Martin" with his wife and son John in July 1638.
He joined the small group of religious dissenters with Roger Williams and moved to Rhode Island in 1638. Chad
worked occasionally as a surveyor. He became a pastor of the First Baptist Church in Providence, Rhode Island
after Roger Williams returned to England to obtain a charter for the colony of Rhode Island and Providence
Plantations. He was the pastor of the First Baptist Church for most of the remainder of his life. Chad lived
on a plot in downtown Providence at modern Market Square and College Street and was buried in a private cemetery
on his homestead lot. His remains were later removed to the North Burial Ground in Providence.
