Greene Family
Thanks to my late cousin Ted for information and leads on the 19th century Greene Family. Based on my research,
"Coventry R.I. Historical Cemeteries" by Eddleman and Sterling (1998), and "The Greenes of Quidnesset"
by Ray Greene Huling (1883/1884; reprinted 1983 in "Genealogies of R.I. Families from R.I. Periodicals," Vol. I,
pp. 362 - 411), this Greene Family descended possibly from the John Greene of Quidnesset line. There is still
considerable controversy on the early John Greene of Quidnesset Family, and no definitive genealogy exists on the
Greenes who are descended from John Greene Jr. For a good review of the controversy of the early John Greene of

Some researchers believe that "John Greene Jr." is an unrelated individual to John Greene of Quidnesset who moved
into the East Greenwich area during the time of the Fones Purchase (middle to late 1600's). Naming patterns in
the descendants of "John Greene Jr.", however, specifically the frequent names of "John Greene," "Daniel Greene,"
"Benjamin Greene," "Enfield Greene," and "Robert Greene" suggest a descent from John Greene of Quidnesset.
I have used the old (and perhaps incorrect) interpretation that John Greene Jr. is the son of John Greene of
Quidnesset. This Greene Family has been one of the most difficult families that I have personally researched.
Thanks to my distant cousin Elaine for researching the Abigail6 Greene (1796 - 1885) line.
The migration of this Greene Family started with John Greene in Quidnesset, which is part of modern day North
Kingstown and south of the old town of Warwick. Parts of the family moved to East Greenwich and Warwick in the
latter half of the 1600's, and then to Coventry by the 1700's. Some branches of the family moved to neighboring
West Greenwich in the 1700's.

John Greene came to Rhode Island by 1639 at the latest with Richard Smith and worked in the trading post that
Richard Smith established at Quidnesset. The nearby town of Warwick was not founded until 1642. John Greene and
Richard Smith were involved in the squabble between the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the colonies of Connecticut
and Rhode Island over the lands in the Narragansett Bay region. John Greene eventually made amends with the
colony of Rhode Island, giving his oath of allegiance to Rhode Island on May 20, 1671. He purchased lands in East
Greenwich and on the island of Jamestown. This information is from Austin's "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode

It is unclear where John Greene Jr. lived during the late 1670's. He may have moved to Newport, R.I. or New York.
He was involved in the Fones Purchase in East Greenwich, R.I. during the 1680's and may have sold this land by
1690. In my opinion, John lived in East Greenwich and had his first three children there until the early 1690's.
He then apparently moved north to southern Warwick as his will proved in Warwick in 1729 distributes his land in
"Cowesett east and west of the river," presumably in the vicinity of Apponaug Cove, to his sons. His son Uzal
(also spelled Usal or Youzel)'s marriage to Susannah Hill is recorded in Warwick in January 1727 (Arnold's VR of
Warwick). Uzal's first four children are recorded in Warwick from 1728 to 1735. These same children are also
recorded in Coventry, R.I. along with Uzal's last two children from 1738 to 1740 (Arnold VR of Coventry). The
middle to late 1730's appear to be the years that several of John Greene Jr.'s sons moved to Coventry, R.I.

James lived at �Maroon Swamp� which is the area of modern day Coventry Center north of Harkney Hill.
His wife Rebecca was the daughter of Nathaniel Cahoone, who was a resident of Warwick, R.I. in the
early 1700�s (see his Earmark Record in �The Early Records of the Town of Warwick,� E.A. Johnson Co.,
Providence, R.I., 1926, p. 10).

This is the negative image of the above picture with letters of the gravestone slightly more legible. The gravestone states:
�Nathaniel Greene Esq., son of James and Rebecca Greene, and grandson of J. Greene of London, died
Sept. 2, 1809, Aged 91 yrs. 2 mos. 18 days.�
The gravestone inscription is controversial as it gives evidence that the descendants of John Greene Jr. are
not descendants of John Greene of Quidnesset. As some researchers claim, John Greene Jr. was an independent
Englishman who came to Rhode Island before the time of the Fones Purchase in East Greenwich in the 1680�s.
Many of the men of the Fones Purchase were former soldiers who served in King Phillip�s War in 1676 and
were rewarded land in East Greenwich for their service. It is possible that our �John Greene Jr.� immigrated
from England to Rhode Island before King Phillip�s War, served as a soldier in King Phillip�s War, then settled
in East Greenwich and later Warwick, R.I.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Index lists John Greene as having performed patriotic service to
the American Cause during the American Revolution. There was a SAR marker between John and Daniel Greene's
gravestones in Sept. 2003. John served on the Town Council of Coventry, Rhode Island during the
Revolutionary War (see �Rhode Island History,� Vol. 29, February & May 1970, �Democracy in Rhode Island,� p. 8).
The 1796 Coventry probate record of John Greene clearly identifies him as a son of James Greene and the husband
of Elizabeth. The identification of John as a son of Ebenezer Greene by Ray Greene Huling and others
appears to be a mistake (see "The Greenes of Quidnesset" by Ray Greene Huling, The Narragansett Historical
Register, 1883/1884, Vol. 2 in 1983 GPC Reprint �Genealogies of Rhode Island Familes from Rhode Island
Periodicals,� Vol. 1, p. 381)
There is strong family oral tradition in both of John�s sons Daniel and Silas Greene�s familes that their
descendants were cousins of Rhode Island General Nathanael Greene. John Greene�s first wife Abigail has not
had her maiden surname clearly identified. However, she is not a strong candidate to have come from the Rhode Island
Warwick Greene Family (the John Greene the Surgeon Family, which General Nathanael Greene descended from).
The probable explanation for the family tradition of kinship with �Nathanael Greene� is that one of John Greene�s
brothers is, in fact, named �Nathaniel� Greene. Nathaniel Greene, Esq. was born in 1718 and lived in the same vicinity
of Coventry, namely Maroon Swamp (modern Coventry Center), Harkney Hill, and the Maple Root Church.
Nathaniel Greene, Esq. is buried in the Greene-Johnson Lot on Arrowhead Road, Coventry Historical
Cemetery 51 (see Eddleman and Sterling�s �Coventry R.I. Historical Cemeteries,� #51). Historical Cemetery 51
is located less than one mile from the Maple Root Cemetery #135, where James Greene, John Greene, and
Daniel Greene are buried. With several of John Greene�s descendants moving to New York, it is easy to
understand how the incorrect family story of kinship with General Nathanael Greene got started.

burial: Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, R.I. (CY135)- -I first visited the Greene section of the Maple Root
Cemetery in Sept. 2003. This cemetery section is located next to the Maple Root Pond and is heavily
vegetated and wooded (gradually getting cleaned though), and some of the stones are in poor condition.

Daniel was a resident of Coventry and West Greenwich, R.I. His wife Lucena Matteson inherited land in West
Greenwich from her father William Matteson in October 1813. This land was along the Carr River in eastern West
Greenwich. She sold part of this land to her son Clarke in 1829 and the remainder to her son Spencer in 1837.

Silas served in the Revolutionary War and several of his female descendants were granted membership in the
D.A.R. The only official military record I have found for him is that he served on board the (privateer?) ship
INDEPENDENCE, captained by Joseph Olney of Rhode Island in the summer of 1781. Silas was
�18 years old� at the time, stood 5� 4 inches, and had a light complexion (Revolutionary War Transcription File
Index, Rhode Island State Archives, Providence, Rhode Island). The ship INDEPENDENCE was built and
launched in May 1781 in Providence and had a short cruise before being captured by the British ship HMS Danae on
July 17, 1781 (Website: �The History of Captain William CREED�

Silas Greene did not file a pension application for his service. Silas moved to upstate New York sometime in the
1780's to 1790's, a period when several Rhode Islanders moved and settled in that part of New York. Silas has
numerous descendants, many of whom moved and settled westward with the expansion of the American frontier in
the 1800's. The following family group data is based on the research of my distant cousin Nancy of Texas, a descendant of
Silas Greene.

(barely legible) in Sept. 2003.
Amos grew up in West Greenwich, R.I. but moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts before 1850. He is listed in the
1850 Federal Census in New Bedford as a farmer with his sons John, Daniel, and Hiram living nearby. By 1850, Amos
was separated from his wife, Susan R. Hopkins, who was living with Charlotte Aldrich in Smithfield, R.I. in 1850 (1850
Federal Census). Perhaps Amos and Susan had divorced by 1850. Charlotte Aldrich died in 1862 and may be a
daughter of Amos and Susan. Susan was living with her daughter Roxana Harris in 1860 in northern Smithfield
(Roxana's husband Orman died in 1853) and was a few houses away from her other daughter Susan M. Aldrich (1860
Federal Census). Amos Greene and his son Hiram died in 1857. Amos was living at 5 First Street in New Bedford
at the time of his death.
John Greene remained in New Bedford, Massachusetts for the rest of his life. Amos Greene Jr. was living with his
brother John in New Bedford in 1860 (1860 Federal Census) and was still in New Bedford in 1880. Daniel Greene has
not been found in the 1860, 1870, or 1880 Censuses yet. A land deed from Susan R. to her sons in 1867 lists
Daniel Greene as living in Worcester, Mass. Land deeds in New Bedford, Mass. indicate that Daniel was living
in Worcester, Mass. with Eunice Ashley in the 1860's before they moved to Dartmouth in 1869 and were married in
New Bedford in 1874. Eunice was originally from the New Bedford area as she sold land to John Greene in New Bedford
in 1853. Clarke Greene was living with his brother John Greene in New Bedford in 1870 and apparently had additional
property in nearby Dartmouth, Mass. in 1870 (1870 Federal Census). Clarke Greene was still living in New Bedford,
Mass. in 1880 (1880 Federal Census). Albert C. Greene was living first in New Bedford during the 1850's, then in
Fall River, Mass. during the 1860's and 1870's (1870 Federal Census), and finally to Tiverton, R.I. by 1880 (1880
Federal Census).
Amos Greene's mother Lucena was the title holder to the Greene family lands in West Greenwich after Amos's father
Daniel died in 1823. Amos may have moved to Cumberland, R.I. by 1830 after Daniel died (more research is required).
Lucena remained in West Greenwich until her death in 1843. There was no probate recorded after her death.
Amos' wife Susan R. (Hopkins) Green(e) died in 1874 and is buried in the Aldrich plot in the Town Cemetery attachment
(NS036) to the Union Cemetery (NS007) in North Smithfield. The Aldrich plot is in relatively good condition
compared to the rest of NS036, which was heavily wooded and overgrown in Sept. 2003. Some of the gravestones are
broken though.

John Greene was a farmer and trader in New Bedford, Massachusetts. His first wife died probably before 1860.
He �officially� married as an old man in 1896 just 11 days before his death Maria Amelia Wood (Coggeshall), who had been living
as his common law wife since the late 1870's (she was almost 40 years his junior; see their entry in the 1880 Federal Census
of New Bedford). Maria was the daughter of William Jason and Christiana Wood and the sister of William Madison Wood, the
wealthy President of the American Woolen Company, which had a few mills in Providence, Rhode Island. Maria married first on
September 24, 1874 John Coggeshall, son of Capt. Samuel Brown Coggeshall and Ellen Chipman Welles. Maria had a son,
John Wells Coggeshall, born May 16, 1875 in New Bedford, through her first marriage. John Wells Coggeshall would later
work with the American Woolen Company and became wealthy. Maria's first husband John Coggeshall moved to California and
served in the Arctic Whaling Fleet, which became trapped in the ice in 1876 destroying many of the whaling ships.
John Coggeshall was one of the survivors and returned to San Francisco, California. Maria (Wood) Coggeshall became the common law
wife of John Greene after John Coggeshall decided to stay and live in California. [See Charles Pierce Coggeshall and

John had at least one child (Roxie Greene) with Maria. Maria married two times after John�s death, first William Whittaker in 1897,
who later died, then Michael J. Fagan in 1908.

Daniel lived in New Bedford, Mass. in 1850 with his brothers John and Hiram (1850 Census). I haven't been able
to find him in the 1860 through 1880 Federal Censuses. What became of his first wife Margaret is unknown.
Eunice Ashley was living as his common law wife since at least 1850 (see 1850 Census New Bedford). Daniel was
apparently living in Worcester, Mass. with Eunice in 1867, as he is mentioned as being from there in a land deed
from Smithfield, R.I. with his mother Susan R. (Hopkins) Greene. Daniel apparently had an �on and off� relationship
with Eunice as he was excluded from a property in New Bedford that she bought in 1874 (the year of their marriage,
see Southern Bristol County Deeds). Daniel and Eunice�s marriage ultimately ended in a Divorce (see her death record).
Daniel was living in Tiverton, R.I. in the 1880's.

Roxana (Roxie) Greene married Orman Harris of Smithfield, R.I. in the early 1840's as her father Amos' family
had moved to northern Rhode Island before eventually settling in New Bedford, Massachusetts by 1850. Orman
died early at age 28, and the widowed Roxie had two young children to bring up. Roxie lived with her mother
Susan R. (Hopkins) Greene in northern Smithfield in 1860 and near her in 1870. Roxie remained a widow in
Smithfield, R.I. for the rest of her life.

Clarke lived with his brother John in New Bedford, Mass. in 1870. He was a farmer and apparently owned some
property in the neighboring town of Dartmouth, Mass in the 1870's (1870 Federal Census). He later became a liquor
dealer in New Bedford in the 1880's (1880 Federal Census). His wife�s parents were from Scotland. Children Hiram,
Minnie, and Daniel all died of tuberculosis.
