Helen Mac Anderson [Parents]

Karl Charles Anderson [Parents] was born 28 Jul 1842 in Smaalene, Sweden. He died 12 Oct 1912 and was buried in Millington Cem, Millington, Kendall, Illinois. Karl married Kari Olesdatter Dyvik on 8 Sep 1878 in Stamnes, Hardanger, Voss, Norway.

Carl Anderson was born July 28, 1842 in Sweden, in the region known as Smaalene or "little lands." (Selma Lagerloff's home was here.) His father was Oliver Anderson, a Swedish merchant who crossed into Norway and settled in Christiania (Oslo) when Carl was 13 years old. Here Carl received an excellent education in the Norwegian Church School and later in a private school. In early manhood he held a responsible position under Herr Herman Gade, the highest ranking naval officer in Norway at that time. Later he was employed in Christiania by a Mr. Anderson, a consul for Norway. He left this position to join the men building the railroad from christiania to Bergen and thence northward to Trondhjem. this was a brilliant engineering feat of its day. Carl Anderson was a dynamite engineer and with his crew worked up to Voss, about 30 miles from Bergen. While on this construction contract, Carl Anderson met a beautiful lass with damask roses in her cheeks and the longest, thickest brown braids of all the girls in the Voss district.
She was Kari Oleson Dyvik, of Dyvik Place, the daughter of Lars Oleson Furness and Martha Hansen of Hardanger. They were married at Stamnes on September 8, 1878. In October 1883, Carl Anderson sailed form Bergen bound for the Fox River settlement at Norway, La Salle, Illinois. He liked the new country so he took out his first citizenship papers in 1884, and sent for his wife and family. He became a naturalized citizen in 1889. For six years he followed farming on the Seymour Potter property. In November 1896, he was critically injured by a premature dynamite explosion in the Millington Sand Pit and was rendered an invalid for the rest of his life. He died August 12, 1912 and lies buried in the new part of the Millington Cemetery. Carl and Kari (Dyvik) Anderson became the parents of twelve children: Maria, Oliver Carl, Martin C, Andrew James, Anna Marie, Edwin, Mathilde Devick, Christian, Samuel, Henry, Maria and Emma.

Kari Olesdatter Dyvik [Parents] was born 15 Jun 1855 in Hardanger, Voss, Norway. She died 14 Aug 1934 in Millington, Kendall, Illinois and was buried in Millington Cem, Millington, Kendall, Illinois. Kari married Karl Charles Anderson on 8 Sep 1878 in Stamnes, Hardanger, Voss, Norway.

Mrs. Kari Dyvik Anderson sailed from Bergen with her two small children in September 1884. In her two trunks she had packed their clothing and her cherished possessions. The children's clothing she had spun, dyed, woven, cut and sewed of the finest wool and she had knit their underwear, stockings and mittens. On shipboard her cabin was entered and her luggage was ransacked and nearly all these thing stolen. In her large green Swedish trunk she brought her cherished bedding and eider-down quilt. With these she had packed her precious heirloom spinning wheel of white birch made by hand by her grandfather Hans Anderson. Also her hand-made wooden chevla with the notched squares for making flat brod. She saw her first pie when she arrived in New York; also her first Negro who fascinated her. In later years she frequently told the children stories of the voyage from Norway. Also of the terrible electrical stroms and bitter cold winters on the Potter farm in La Salle County, when she longed for the comfortable and pleasant home she had known back in Norway. she was a noble Norwegian emigrant mother, and kept her family together, raised and educatedthem ater the accident to the father and breadwinner. She had been well educated in a private school in Bergen, had a good sense of humor and wit, and excellent memory, and a fine gift for writing poetry. She educated herself in english and did a great amount of reading in English literature and the classics. When 65 years old she took up a course in penmanship. She passed away at her home in Millington August 14, 1934.
