31. Levi Patterson DUNN (Levi , Daniel , Levi ) was born on 3 Apr 1829 in , Greene, TN. He died on 25 Apr 1885 in Townsend, Blount, Tennessee and was buried in Myers Cemetery, Townsend, Blount, Tennessee.
Grandpa Didn't Tell a Lie
During this Civil War Centenial many intersting stories of that war are being told, and one in the Townsend community of Sevier County, says Mrs. Norma Wilson, of Townsend, is about how Grandpa Dunn avoided getting arrested, and at the same time avoided telling an out and out lie.
Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, whose grandchildren still live in the townsend community, were Union sympathizers, and opposed to slavery. So the old Dunn home became a part of the underground railroad.
It wasn't of course, a railroad. It was a series of Union sympathizers who, usually under the cover of darkness, welcomed fleeing slaves, and saw that they reached the next point toward freedom. From Sevier County this next point usually was the home of some sympathizer in Greene County, Tenn.
Grandpa Dunn was a man of sterling honesty. He didn't want to tell a lie. Still, he didn't want to get arrested. So, he named one of the big rooms in his big house "Greene County." When Confederate soldiers came and asked him if he was quartering any escaped slaves Grandpa would say:
"Yes I have seen the slaves you describe, but I have sent them to Greene County."
Levi married Sarah Jane "Sally" Freshour, daughter of George Washington Freshour and Alcey Or Ailcey LAWSON, on 15 Dec 1850 in , (Of) Blount, Tennessee. They were sealed on 11 Jan 1963 in the Los Angeles California temple. Sarah was born on 13 Jun 1828 in , Blount, Tennessee. She died on 27 Feb 1895 in Townsend, Blount, Tennessee and was buried in Myers Cemetery, Townsend, Blount, Tennessee. Sarah was baptized on 2 Sep 1960 in the Los Angeles California temple. She was endowed on 25 Jan 1961.
