I found the following at a website Dr. Johnson's Harrison Notes February 1997
1880. David Plemmons 19 Farmer, wife Nancy 22, Mary M. 7 months old. note from writer to addressee: You mentioned that your ancestor Fate Plemmons was 3/4 the Indian. I am fascinated by Indian blood and I am sorry I have not concentrated more on Plemmons On my mother's side I am descended from Old Duck Shelton whom you must have heard about in connection with a lost "silver mine" and in molding his own coins. Duck's mother was an Indian woman named Glumdalclitch. She had Duck (William Duckworth) by Rodeerick Shelton, first settler on Shelton Laurel. She had George "Rock" Franklin by Solomon Stanton. She is said to have been the mother of Solomon Chandley. She was sometimes called a Shelton but most generally went by the name of Franklin which she picked up from a Franklin man she married I think William Franklin. (Interesting .. Duckworths they come from SC but before that at Abbott's Creek Baptist... Fate is a nickname used in these parts to stand for Lafayette. Shelton Laurel is the site of a big massacre of Sheltons in the mountains and remote during the Civil War. They were Yankees and killed by Confederates.

Mary Aka Glumdalclitch Aka Stevens /Franklin/

May have been on 1800 Buncombe Co., NC, Census, Mary Franklin, 1 fem 26-44 (1756-1774)

"There is much disagreement as to whether Roderick Shelton or David Shelton was the first Shelton to settle in Shelton Laurel, and therefore considered the founder of Shelton Laurel. Roderick Shelton appeared in the Buncombe Co. census beginning with 1800. There is conflicting accounts as to who were his parents, but general agreement was that he was a Revolutionary War Veteran from Virginia. General agreement also is that he married Sarah Briggs, and that he had other wives; one, a Cherokee Indian woman by the name of "Nora" or "Ursula" or "Glumdalclitch" aka "Mary Franklin", aka "Mary Stevens Franklin". There just doesn't seem to be any way to choose between the various possibilities. There is some disagreement as to whether David Shelton was Roderick's son, or that David was Roderick's brother. In Buncombe County land records, their is a transfer of land to Roderick Shelton as early as August 27, 1800 and a transfer of land to David Shelton as early as December 10, 1801."

The above taken from:

"The Sheltons" by Claymon (Clay) Hensley -Copyright 1985 page 55 & 56. Some list David's death date as Jan. 19, 1863 Madison Co.-NC.

The following from Sally Baughn - [email protected] The Russell FRANKLIN line connects back at Mary FRANKLIN/Glumdalclitch. One of her sons was William FRANKLIN/Duckworth SHELTON whose father was Roderick SHELTON, the other was George Washington "Rock" FRANKLIN, father unknown.
These half-brothers married sisters, Nancy and Elizabeth "Betty" BOWMAN, and that may be where some of the confusion originated.

Mary married (1) Roderick Shelton, son of John Shelton and Philepinea, in Not Married. Roderick was born in 1755 in , Amelia, Virginia. He died in 1816 in Shelton Laurel, Buncombe, North Carolina and was buried in 1816 in Shelton Cemetery, Shelton Laurel, Madison, North Carolina. He was sealed to his parents on 27 Oct 1992. Roderick was baptized on 24 Jul 1992. He was endowed on 26 Aug 1992.

There was a marriage listed to a Sarah WATKINS in the LDS file

Roderick was a Revolutionar War Soldier. I have not found his pension application. (Joe Payne)

SHELTON FAMILIES OF McMINN CO. TENNESSEE by James Shelton, page 5 (McClung Historical Collection)

"To authenticate Roderick Shelton in the lineage, there are not many official records to go on. His grandson, Samuel W. Shelton, my father told me that his grandfather was Roderick Shelton. A search at Stewart, Virginia, county seat of Patrick County, disclosed only one record in which Roderick was named. On Decmeber 3, 1795 he witnessed the marriage of one Benjamin Johnson to one Sally Franklin, one of these perhaps being kin of Roderick. Nor is he named in the records of either Pittsylvania or Henry Counties. It is not unlikely that he adopted the name Roderick -- possibly his middle name -- to avoid being confused with so many of his common name like James or William. There is some evidence that Roderick migrated from Connecticut, though not substantiated.
The name is familiar among Daniel Shelton's descendants there. One Roderic Sheldon with a family consisting of himself, a son under 16, and 3 females in the census of 1790 was in Hartford Township. There is in the Mormon library in Atlanta a record showing Roderick in Patrick County as the father of James Shelton born March 1, 1791 and another showing him in Henry County as the father of Lewis Shelton, born September 15, 1785. this record shows his wife as Nora as the mother of James (should be Urea, perhaps) and shows Sarah Scruggs as the mother of Lewis. These records do confirm that he wsa the Patrick County and that he was the father of James, born there in 1791. Deed records in North Carolina in Buncombe County between 1790 and 1820 name Roderick several times. Reportedly Roderick had 7 sons and 4 daughters, some remaining in North Carolina, others to Tennessee, Kentucky and Missour. Pertinent to Shelton history are the following deed records in Buncombe County, North Carolina."

p. 7
"A letter written July 6, 1905 by John Shelton, grandson of Roderick, lists Roderick's sons and confirms that he served in the Revolutionary War. It is here quoted:

After my best respects to you, I can inform you that I am seventy-seven years old, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina in 1828, and have lived in this county ever since, though Buncombe has been divided until where I now live is Madison County. My father told me that my grandfather came from England and first settled in Virginia, then migrated into this country and died here. My father told me that Grandfather Roderick was in the Revolutionary War. He had several sons. My father's name was David Shelton. I had Uncle Martin, Uncle James, Uncle Armistead, Uncle Lewis and Uncle William. (Another copy of the letter extant shows John as one of the uncles.) Lewis moved to Missouri and died there, James moved to Tennessee and died there, Martin died here in this country, and he had a son Solomon Shelton who left this country about the time you state in your letter, but I was small and don't recollect him. My information is that he went to Oregon Territory. We have large connections in Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. This Solomon Shelton was my first cousin. So this is all the Sheltons I have heard of in this country about that time. I will close by saying I remain your kindred until death."

He was selected for jury duty for the April term in 1800. He died there in Shelton Laurel in about 1817 and is buried there on Alleghany Mountain."
