‑ Pg. 63 States William Fugate, son of William and Jane Fugate, was born
(according to his gravestone) on 2 Nov 1799. He ws married to Nancy Riley,
daughter of John and Louisa Gibson‑Riley. She was born about 1812. Descendants
provide this information: William "Bill" Fugate came from Virginia with pack
on his back, settled in Claiborne County, Tennessee. It's told that Nancy
Riley's father John left Virginia to keep his daughter Nancy from marrying
Bill Fugate because of his poverty. When Bill died, he had LARGE HOLDINGS
and could have bought OUT ALL THE RILEYS. He was a Sheriff of Claiborne County
at one time. During the Civil War, a roving rebel gang killed one of John
and Louisa's sons because he wouldn't tell where his father was, and this
turned the Rileys and Nancy's sons into Union sympathizers. The daughters,
however, were married to Parkeys and were rebel sympathizers. Virginia Fugate
reported that the Riley incident was told to her husband by Elisha Fugate,
grandson of Martin Fugate, and told to him by John Riley, nephew of Nancy
Riley. Reference ‑ Pg. 64 States William Fugate died on Jan 9, 1855. Nancy
Riley‑Fugate was residing with her daughter Mary at the time of the 1880
census. They were buried in the Family Plot on the Farm of Neil Walker, one
mile from John N. Fugate.

in Claiborne County, and was recently perusing your genealogy web page.
I have
a couple of questions about your McVey ancestry:
1) Is your
#21, Minerva McVey, the same Minerva McVey who was married to Henry Harrison
Friar on Jan 20, 1867? The age looks
about right. (I am not descended from this couple but have some close cousins
who are.)
2) One
of the old deeds in my possession from our family place in Claiborne County
transfers a piece of property from F. L. McVey and his wife Mary E. McVey
to my great‑grandfather Thomas Riley on Feb 25, 1881.
Do you think this might be your #19, Fielding L.?
(Just curious; the property would have been off what is now Cedar
Fork Road and Alanthus Hill Road {63E} near the old Hoop Creek area.)
