Part I: Catherine ROTH, my ancestor

Born "15 Aug 1812" per a catalogue of Moravian women entry circa 1831, manuscript in the collection of the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, PA. Birth date corroborated by obituary 04 March 1898, the Bethlehem Globe Times. She was the daughter of "Joh.[annes] w.[ife] Catharina ROTH geb. [born] ENGLER"per the Moravian Archives. She was the daughter of "John ROTH of Hecktown," Lower Nazareth Township, per marriage record of 13 Dec 1835 (see below). She was born in a non-Moravian "Settlement," per the Moravian Archives entry made circa 1831. She was born in "Lower Nazareth Township," Northampton Co., PA, per husband's obituary of 7 Sep 1891.

"Bap. and confirmed in the [Christ] Lutheran [and Reformed] Church at Schoenersville, by Rev. [Johann Conrad] YEAGER, [d. 1832]." Rev. YEAGER was an itinerant minister who started the congregation at Friedensville, Lower Saucon, Northampton Co, PA and later served Hecktown and Schoenersville.

"...When fifteen years of age [c.1827-8], she came to Bethlehem and joined the Moravian Church." per obituary 04 March 1898, the Bethlehem Globe Times. She was allowed to join the congregation in 1831 per the Moravian Archives, at age 19. She may have immediately joined the Moravian Church and lived in the congregational Sister's House, or she may have attended the Moravian school for girls as a boarding student and joined the church at a later date.

Bur. God's Acre, Bethlehem, Northampton Co., PA, per the Bethlehem Diary, manuscript, Moravian Archives. Burial records were published in "Transactions of the Moravian Historical Society" in 1897, however she died in 1898. Grave site not located.

Levering: Michael HINKLE was a tenant farmer of Moravian land at Market and High Sts., Bethlehem, d. 10 Sept 1825, funeral officiated by the Moravian Rev. SEIDEL, son-in-law John ROTH took over the farm in Bethlehem. Levering, Joseph Mortimer. "A History of Bethlehem Pennsylvania 1741-1892 with Some Account of its Founders and Their Early Activity in America," 1903. HINKLE was not buried in the Moravian cemetery called God's Acre, so he was probably not a Moravian. d. 20 Oct 1889 Bethlehem, Northampton Co., PA. "Mrs. John ROTH" died "October 20, 1889 in Bethlehem Twp. [Northampton Co., PA], age 80." Survived by sons "George of Bethlehem, Michael of Springtown [Bucks Co., PA], per the Bethlehem Daily Times.
