He stated that he enlisted on 28 June 1861 in Capt. John Rowan's Company. He fought in the battles of Barbersville and Fishing Creek in KY. Later, he fought in GA at the Battle of Chickamauga and in a general fight from there on to Atlanta, GA where they surrendered. He then followed Gen. Sherman from Atlanta, GA to Charlotte, NC where the prisoners were taken. There, on 3 May 1865, he was paroled. He stated that he previously received a medical discharge from the company for rheumatism but had stayed on with the company.

In 1909, he listed a wife aged 68, four sons, and one daughter all "over age" and gone from home. He also stated that he could not read nor write.
