A very special thank you to Jimmy Ogden and his wife Mary Sue Forehand Ogden. They made me feel very welcome as I asked question after question about the history of Lookout cemetery and the old town. Mary's great grand parents are buried here also.
One has to drive down between his barn and sheds and thru his gates and pasture to get to the cemetery. It's always better to ask permission to go onto someone's property, so I would advise anyone visiting the cemetery to ask either Jimmy or his wife, or you can drive futher down the road to where it turns and ask Craig Ogden.
To get to this cemetery:
Going south on the Pecos Highway (Hwy 285) from the Loving city limits, go about 3/10 mi. and turn right on the Higby Hole road or CR 716..It's a little over 2 mi. down CR 716 to CR 718 or Ogden rd.
Turn right or west and go about 3/10 mi. before you get to the farm house that's very close to the road. Turn left or south and go down between some sheds and to a double gate. Take the left gate and follow the faint tracks to the cemetery. ( You will be able to see it from the gate ). A rule of thumb for gates is, if it's closed, then close it when you leave and if it's open, then leave it open; in other words, leave it like you found it.
This cemetery is very old, dating back to the middle 1880s, but is still in use.
There are over 100 old graves marked only by field rocks or wooden crosses that have fallen apart across the graves. The paint used on many for names and dates has weathered away and there is no way to tell who is buried there.
Many very old, nice stones have been vandalized and broken; others have tipped over onto the graves due to sunken spots and these can't be read. I have surveyed over a hundred cemeteries and all had lost and unmarked graves, but it's sad that there are so many in Lookout Cemetery, mostly due to the wooden crosses and rocks used to mark the graves. Nature is slowly reclaiming it's own.
In an interview with Mr. Jimmy Ogden on 12-17-2003, he stated that as a small child he watched a funeral at the cemetery, and the people brought the body in an old Model T Ford, then stood the body up against the car when the grave had to be made bigger to fit the body.
