Josephine Lavinia Boraston, 84, lived in an unremarkable detached house on the edge of the village of Brynsiencyn, near Llanfairpwll, Anglesey, where she bred rare Jacob sheep and show dogs.
But when she died in May, the modest-living pensioner left an estate worth 2,288,191.
Mrs Boraston bequeathed the vast majority of this to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and ordered that a new home be found for her animals.
But she also specified that her daughter Victoria, who is believed to be independently wealthy, should receive nothing.
Her will states: 'I do not wish her to inherit any part of my estate and any claim she may make against my estate shall be
resisted by my executors.' A spokesman for the RSPB said last night: 'I believe it may be the biggest legacy we have ever received.' Mrs Boraston and her husband Edward ran two upmarket women's dress shops in the centre of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, before she retired to Wales.
Last night, villagers said Mrs Boraston was regarded as something of an eccentric.
Her beloved Boston Terrier dogs slept in a heated kennel and villagers say she even held Christmas parties for the dogs
giving them presents and special Christmas cakes made of dog food.
Village general store owner Chris Parks said: 'I did know that she had a daughter and I knew that they were not exactly on good terms for a long time.
'But I have not seen her around here for quite a time. I think she lives down south, Buckinghamshire or somewhere.' He said Mrs Boraston's will came as no surprise because she was 'mad about animals'.
Shopworker Wendy Davies remembered Mrs Boraston coming in to buy groceries, and she was not shocked by her wealth.
She said: 'I am not surprised, no, she always had enough money.' Mrs Boraston also left 500 each to the Boston Terrier Club and the International League for the Protection of Horses.
She kept her rare sheep in two fields near her home.
Mrs Boraston, a widow for around 20 years, who lived with a home help, requested that a bird and animal sanctuary be set up in memory of her father.
In her will the pensioner demanded that her dogs and rare breed sheep are found a new home, well looked after and are not put to sleep.
Christened at Coventry Cathedral, Mrs Boraston was the daughter of Alderman Doctor T Soden and his wife Louie. And part of her will allows for a commemoration to her family's service to the city.
She also requested a service in the cathedral.
Mrs Boraston, who was widowed in 1980, also donated any medals and uniforms belonging to her great uncle Admiral A Wilmshurst to the Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth.
An RSPB spokesman added: 'We are grateful to Mrs Boraston, it is going to be very good news for wildlife.
'She came to us in 1994 and since then she had kept in touch. A number of her wishes were discussed, including a possible land purchase for a nature reserve to commemorate the name of her father.
'She was very keen on wildlife and was a very interesting lady, living on a farm surrounded by animals.
'Obviously, we are going to use the money to help protect and conserve wildlife, which we will do in a way best fitting her wishes.'

A TEACHER barred from suing Birmingham lawyers over the handling of his father's pounds 140,000 will has won an appeal court date.
William Spring claims law firm Williamson and Soden were to blame after the fortune was wiped out by legal costs.
But his pounds 600,000 compensation claim was rejected in March when judges ruled the firm had already been cleared in earlier civil actions.
Now Mr Spring, who is facing bankruptcy, hopes to have the decision reversed when he appears at the Royal Courts of Justice on October 28.
Mr Spring's father, also called William, died in 1986. The businessman from Hall Green, Birmingham, left an estate valued at pounds 140,000.
By 1990 the money had still not been distributed because of disputes within the family but the Springs launched a joint legal action against the solicitors over their pounds 50,000 bill. The action was eventually rejected in 1996 and costs awardedagainst the estate, wiping out the remaining money.

A TEACHER barred from suing lawyers over the handling of his father's pounds 140,000 will has lost his appeal.
William Spring claims Birmingham law firm Williamson and Soden were to blame after the fortune was wiped out by legal costs.
But Mr Spring, who is facing bankruptcy, was barred from suing the company for pounds 600,000 compensation in March after judges ruled the firm had done nothing wrong.
Last week, the father of three lost his bid to overturn that decision at the Royal Courts of Justice.
His father, also called William, left a pounds 140,000 estate when he died at his Hall Green home, Birmingham, in 1986.
But a series of legal disputes over the will saw the estate, administered by Williamson and Soden, eaten up.
Mr Spring said: "If I had gained access to my inheritance I could have launched a business venture and earned pounds 600,000.
"This latest court defeat is a blow - but I won't give up. I will go to the House of Lords and even the European courts to win justice."
