Soden in the Revolutionary War

Many thanks to Glenn Soden, who has deciphered the meaning behind the words.  Without him, they would be just names on a piece of paper still.

NEW YORK IN THE REVOLUTION AS COLONY AND STATE

Heading: Dutchess County Militia -- Sixth Regiment

From NJ Archives regarding Sodens in the REV WAR and in the Whiskey Rebellion in 1793 as follows:

"SODEN, John.    Privte (sp), Middlesex County Militia.
Received certificate No. 1462, dated June 10, 1784, and signed by Thomson
Steele, for L2:13:9, for the depreciation of his Continental pay in the
Middlesex County Militia.  (Indents, 'A', Rev. War, page 306)."
"SODON, John Sr.
Received from Azariah Dunham, A.C.P., certificate dated April 10, 1780,

"SODEN, William.
Private, Captain David Chamber's Company, 3rd Regiment, Middlesex County

latter date he was killed at Bennett's Island,
(Inv. #22373-David Luker; Inv. #671-John Irvin)"
[Joyce, these latter references indicate that the pension applications for David Luker and John
Irvin, both residents of Cranbury / So. Amboy and participants in the REV WAR
have affidavits regarding William Soden]
  "SODAN, Joshua.
    Private, Captain McMyer's Company, lst Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line;
enlisted April 18, 1777, for the war; on rolls in 1777, as 'supposed to

From Rhode Island State Archives, 337 Westminster St., Providence, RI 02903
we have many file card references the Jonathan Soden / Sodan who served in
the MA and RI and also Continental Army at Valley Forge - legend reports are
that he ran away from home to join the REV WAR and served many years - his
pension file at Nat'l Archives (portions of which you placed on the Web site)
relate his activities and family - marrying a widow Mary Gorman from RI and
moving to Orange Co., NY and having a son David and a daughter Lydia who
married a Peck and a Turner.  [at least two DAR files and one SAR file relate
to this Jonathan).
The card I will recite ties this Jonathan to NJ as follows:
"Soden Jonathan B. Middletown N.J. R. Rov. R.I. (Tanner) Enlisted Jan. 10,
1781 for 3 yrs; age 27; size 5 ft 10 in; dark hair; dark complexion. R. I.
regt for year 1781 etc. Regtl Book S. A. I. 13."

"    LIEUTENANT JAMES EDWARD SODEN.
Lient. James E. Soden enlisted as a private in Company E, 7th Regt. Freehold, March 3, 183  (I also inquired if this date was 1883, as it is missing a digit).  He was then seventeen years of age.  He was elected Corporal, May 5m, 1888; Sergeant, April 2, 1892;  Second Lieutenant, January 16, 1897.
His father, James R. Soden, of this place, enlisted in 1862 with the 29th N. J. Vols., and was promoted to be a corporal and later to be sergeant.  Two brothers also were in the 14th Regt., one of them, Daniel P. Soden, was killed in action at Cold Harbor, charging the Breastworks.
In the War of 1812 Lieut. Soden's grandfather, Simeon Freeman, was attached to a company of infantry and was at the Highlands when the enemy was repulsed from landing.  In the Revolutionary War his great grandfather, Michael Erickson, fought with the New Jersey troops.  Jonathan Craig, Lieut. Soden's Great-grandfather on his father's side, was killed at the battle of Monmouth.  His great-grandmother, wife of Jonathan Craig, afterwards married a Soden and her son, Jonathan Craig, added the name of his stepfather - Soden.
Lieut. Soden also had several cousins who served in the War of 1861 - Robert Soden, who was killed in the Shenandoah Valley; Charles Soden, who was in the 29th; Rhea Soden, in the 14th, and Jacob Soden in the 38th.
James Freeman, (brother of the late Wm. H. Freeman, of this place) son of Simeon Freeman, above mentioned, was in the 48th N.Y. Vols., with George Sparks, of Freehold.  "
