Vicksburg, Miss
Feb. 8, 1863
Dear and affectionate wife
I wil rite you a few lines to let you no that I am wel as common but stiff and
sore. we marched from the other side of big black river back to vicksburg
yesterday. I hope those lines may find you all wel. I read a letter from you on
the 5th and was glad to hear from you and hear that you was all wel. I had
almost give out getting any more letters. I was glad to hear that linea was
staying with you and to hear that Mr. Wiett is so good to you. I never can do
enough for him. the letter Foster rote to me I can't tel you what was in it but
it was the most degrading and redculus letter you ever read. I want to see you
and the children as bad as I ever did I in my life. I no suda looks sweete cooking. buddy and georgia
is sweete too. they are all pretty children. I hope they may be raised rite. I
am sorry that you could not get no one to build your garden. I hope I can come
home before long to work for you tho I can't tel. fighting is expected here. we
can't tel when peace wil be made. every thing is very hy here. I want you to
rite often. I love to read letters from you. tel linea I want to see her and
for her to rite to me. tel suda and buddy to rite how the wheat looks. I must close.
give my respects to all inquiring friends. remember me at all times. we all
have to dy.
