War of 1812 - O’Neals who fought in the War of 1812

Over 200 of our collective O’Neal ancestors fought for various American forces in the War of 1812.   This list provides as complete of an inventory of all of the soldiers with that surname from this war as can be found at any one place on the internet.

It is provided here both as a tribute to these brave men as well as an aid in helping you advance your research in Military records for your O’Neal ancestors from this era.

The table below contains a transcript of all O’Neal soldiers found in the National Archives official Record Group M602, Microfilm Roll 156 in their collection housed at the National Archives building in Washington D.C.  entitled Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers During The War of 1812.

This page contains the entries found on this roll of microfilm for all individuals with the surname O’NEAL or any derivation of O’NEAL.   ( I did not transcribe those with surname of NEAL or other forms of NEAL ).

Footnotes for each column containing additional detail are located at the end of the list below.

If you wish to continue your research of any of these individuals with original records on file in the NARA offices in Washington D.C., I’d recommend you review this 1991 article from Prologue Magazine first.

Special Note about “Old War” Files

Many soldiers have military and pension files in the same record group as the War of 1812 Pension Files labeled “Old War”.   Often, these files are for soldiers who served prior ot the civil war, but may not have served during the War of 1812.   A few of these soldiers are listed here to assist you with additional research should they be one of your ancestors:

Hugh O’Neil, Private, Company I, 2nd Regiment, U.S. Infranty, enlisted in Kentucky.

Footnotes

a -

No.   The number listed here is simply a number that I used to record the sequence with which these names were transcribed from the microfilm.  Unfortunately, there was no numbering scheme used in the index cards themselves or on the image of the cards on the microfilm.   The only use of these numbers is to cross-reference the numbers in my original transcription document and to refer back to from other portions of this website.

1 -

Name.  The Name column contains the Name of the soldier as listed on the index cards that were filmed by the Archives.   These index cards are hand written, so the name’s are listed as they appear in the handwriting of the military clerk or archives clerk who created the cards sometime in the 1800s.   On the microfilm, the cards are generally in alphabetical order, although a large number of exceptions exist.  If you search the microfilm for a given name, be sure and search the entire segment of Roll 156 in the section with entries beginning with the letters On.  Many other names (not derivatives of O’Neal) appear between groups of these names on the film.

2 -

Alias.  On some of the microfilmed index cards, an entry was made indicating that the card existed merely to point to another card with an alternate spelling of the soldiers name in the original index file.  An entry in this table does not reflect that the soldier had an alias, but merely that there was more than one index card in the index file for the same soldier, under two different spellings of his last name.

3 -

Rank.   On many of the cards, one or two ranks of the soldier was shown.    The first rank shown on the index card represented the rank of the soldier at time of enlistment,  and the 2nd card listed the rank of the soldier at time of discharge (or death, if the soldier was killed in action).   In this table, the presence of an entry in the rank column generally means that the rank upon enlistment and rank upon discharge were the same.   In some cases, I’ve listed both ranks when the discharge rank differed from the enlistment rank.   In many cased, I did not transcribe the rank, even though it existed on the film, so, the absence of a rank in this table does not indicate that a rank

is not shown on the index card for the soldier.  Likewise, many soldiers do not have rank shown on the index card, but it is still possible that the soldier had a paper file on record in the archives which does contain an indication of the soldier’s rank.

4 -

Company/Regiment.   Where entries exist in this column, they indicate the information that was present on the index card for the soldier on the microfilm.  Many different conventions were used on the original index cards to indicate the unit that the soldier served in.   Sometimes, only the Captain’s name was listed, sometimes only the regiment or company number was listed, sometimes a description of the function of the service (Mounted) is listed.   Many of the soldiers in the war of 1812 were from State Militia’s rather than a part of the “regular army” which was under the command of the federal government.    If an entry exists in this table for a soldier, that entry was taken from the index card.   The absence of an entry does not mean that the unit is not on file, it simply means that it was not listed on the index card or that I did not transcribe it.

5 -

Pension.   If an entry is found in this column, it indicates that an entry has been found in one of the various lists of Pensioners or Pensioner’s widows for soldiers of the           War of 1812 that may be a match for this soldier.   There is no indication on the Compiled Service Records Index as to whether the soldier ever applied for or received a pension, so these correlations are correlations that I have made based upon examining the matching information in the records.   If the word “Pension” appears with no link, you should check the

source listed referred to below for more information.   In some cases, I’ve provided additional detail on this site, so you can simply click the word pension to find additional detail about the possible existence of a pension file.    If you feel that I have provided a link to pension information that is for the wrong soldier in this table, email me and I’ll address. it.

Pension* - An entry of Pension* indicates that an entry exists in the book Index to War of 1812 Pension Files, VIII, Page N-2  which is possibly for the soldier listed here.

Pension+ - An entry of Pension+ indicates that an entry exists on the National Archives Microfilm Record Group M313, Roll 71, which contains a catalog of soldiers who applied for pensions prior to the civil war.   This Film is labeled Index to War of 1812 Pension Application Files, and the microfilm was created from files in existence in the National Archives in Washington D.C. in 1960.    Many of these pension application files contain information indicating that the pension request was rejected for a variety of reasons.  In other cases, I’ve found files referenced on this microfilm which reflect pension applications which exist for soldiers who served well after the completion of the War of 1812.  (the first one I retrieved and reviewed personally was for a soldier who didn’t even enlist until the 1850s).    If a link is provided, then additional informaiton is provided behind the link.  If the term Pension+ is listed, but no link is provided, then I have no additional information from the pension file, and you will need to consult the original pension file yourself to determine if additional details exist.

Special Note about soldiers with pension files.   If a separate Pension File was retained by the Government for the soldier, those files often contain much more detailed information related to the soldier’s residence, age, family, surviving family (for deceased soldiers), etc.   Many of these pension files were created in the mid and late 19th century and provide richer information about the soldier than the military file does.

6 -

Link.  If a link is listed in this column of the table, this is a link that I have established that will provide more information about the soldier.   These are link’s that I have established to various O’Neal soldiers who fought in the War of 1812 and the correlation between that soldier and the additional information that I’m providing is a correlation that I have concluded is accurate.   You are encouraged to do your own research to veirfy my conclusions.   If you find a link to additional information on my website or links to external websites (including the family tree’s at rootsweb), that you do not think are accurate, I encourage you to email me and indicate that you think

the link is in error and I will address it.

7 -

County.  The only entries on the index cards that I found for these 200+ O’Neal soldiers was for certain soldiers that served from unit’s in Hyde County, North Carolina.  For some reason, the cards from those units listed Hyde County in addition to the state on the index card, so I’ve listed that here.   Any other references to counties listed here are entries that I have made based upon a conclusion that I’ve drawn about the identity of a specific soldier.   Where the entry in the county column is for this latter reason, I’ve denoted that in the table entry.

8 -

State Served From.   This column contains the reference from the original index cards found on the microfilm indicating the state from which the soldier served from.  Generally, this designation represents the state where the company or regiment was based.  In most cases, it can be implied that this is the home state of the soldier,  but not always.   There are many cases of soldiers who lived in one state, but traveled elsewhere to enlist in the various military units, possibly to enlist with a family member or a friend.   I’ve listed these soldiers in this table alphabetically within the state that the index cards indicate that they served from, but it should be noted that the index card file and the microfilm are not sorted by state, so if you reference the original microfilm, you will need to look by soldiers name only to find the correct entry.    In some instances, there is no reference to the state for which a soldier served from.   These entries are generally for soldiers who served in “regular army” or Navy units of the Federal Government, rather than a state militia.   In either case, it is possible that information in the military file may indicate which state a soldier was from, but it was not indicated on the index card as shown on the microfilm.   Given that the information is so critical for  identification of a soldier, in all cases I transcribed the state if it was listed on the microfilm, so if there is no entry for the soldier in this column, it indicates that no state entry was indicated on the index card

on the microfilm.
