George Grauer Westbrook

George was born in Linden, Marengo County, in 1851, the son of Elizabeth Grauer and James Westbrook

George married Marcella Braswell and named a son Clarence Grauer Westbrook in 1879.

His grandfather George Grauer was born in 1801 Germany and the name has been carried through this family. However, the name may have been misunderstood over the years and has appeared as Grower, and Grier. George Grauer is found on the 1830 census of Marengo near Williamson Glass, and not far from Cader Holt, John Porter, Mark Porter. The 1837 land records indicate that Moses Westbrooke bought his land in Marengo, as did a John Etheridge.

Mark Porter's daughter, Sophia, became the wife of George Grauer in 1824, having several children including Elizabeth who was born in 1827. Sophia's husband and sons, joined many of the other men in their community, to serve in the battle for the Confederacy.

James Westbrook died about 1850, having one son named William H. Westbrook, but Elizabeth was pregnant and had George in 1851.  She is found on the 1850 census living with her parents, widowed in 1860 with the two boys and then in 1870 she has remarried to Mr. Lawson, and her boys are still with her but she has more children and her mother in this household.

Her son George married Marcella Braswell in 1879.   Her parents were Mary T. Glass and William B. Braswell.

Mary's parents were Hannah Holt, the daughter of Cader Holt, and Willis Glass, who was the son of Williamson Glass and Mary Baker.

George and Marcella Westbrook had Clarence in 1879 and he married Carrie Etheridge who had a son named Bruce Garland Westbrook.

There were many marriages among the descendants of the first families of Marengo and many remained to raise their children there.
