Bozeman History

Kathy Lorena has been researching her past for about 20 years and within the past two years meeting new cousins of the Bozeman family who are also researching this lineage.  Those in Hope Hull had no idea they were related to those in Dublin and Ramer, but it seems to have been one little trail back in the day.

Mordecai's son Peter migrated to Montgomery Alabama, while his son John migrated to Mississippi in the 1820s.  John's descendants call him native american who also married a native american plus at that time, Mississippi was Choctaw Territory.  So what do we know about their mother? Nothing.  The simple story of their origination was they lived amongst many tribes as the colonies were first being formed.  So far all we have is Evan Pugh's diary where Peter married in 1786 to Sarah Brown and she had 3 daughters on the 1790 census and  a son born that year named Meade. If William Henry was born in 1802, young Sarah may have had more children before him. In fact Jesse was born in 1793 and they had the land surveyed in 1826 so there is a strong possibility there were more daughters born and married before the big migration.

.

Peter's son William Henry is our common ancestor.

He married Martha Hill and named a son Peter Edward in 1834. Even so there is no marriage record found yet; she moved to be near her family in Dublin on the 1850 census. Wm Henry signed his name on many documents in 1822 and 1824 Darlington, S.C., then again in 1828, 1829, 1838 in Montgomery, AL. Henry died oin 1847 and in 1848 his brother Jesse filed in court as the Administer of that Estate.  Jesse also signed purchase agreements for items taken from the children. He filed a document naming Henry's children in Orphans Court and also a Widows Dowry so Martha could keep the house.  Her boys served in the Civil War along with their many cousins.  Peter Edward is buried by R. L. Hill in a private family cemetery behind the Hills Chapel Church.  Our family says there used to be about 50 tombstones there, all now covered with brush and fallen trees, but we found Alice Lorena's.  She was Peter's daughter in law. Peter's son John Thomas was first married to Alice Lorena Stephens, having Rollie, Lorena, Ethel and John Jr. who died at birth with his mom. Then he married Ellen who had Bob and more children.  John and Ellen are buried across from the church in the public cemetery.  John had married two others after Ellen died, but they found him too unpleasant to live with.Only recently have I been able to convince the state that he was Lorena's father and her amended death certificate, also states that her mom was Alice Lorena Stephens. This will assist me in joining the DAR, already accepted by Hazel's new chapter, in Prattville. Then I will try to get Mordecai recognized and honored as the father of Peter.

Many documents have been gathered  in Alabama. Yet Peter had no will. I've been advised that during that time in history, the eldest son became the administrator and that is what Jesse did. He took care of his mother Sarah, petitioned court as needed and later cared for Henry's family in 1847/
