BIOGRAPHY OF REV. CHARLES ALEXANDER VAUGHN

 

Charles Alexander Vaughn was born June 07, 1907 in Knox Co, KY; died February 26, 1974.  He then moved back to Madison Co. and attended Berea High School and entered Johnson Bible School in 1927.  In 1928, he began ministering in Tennessee and entered what is now called Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY in 1930.  He is a graduate of Johnson Bible College, Kimberline Heights, TN and Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, KY.  He did post-graduate work at the University of KY, Lexington, KY.  He was principal of the Baker County Schools when he met Thelma at the Mulkeytown Christian Church.  He married Thelma Marian Short while he was serving at a church in Mulkeytown, IL.  They took their honeymoon through the mountains of KY.  Their first home was 602 Rosedale, Richmond, KY.  Charles stayed with Mr. & Mrs. Scott McGlasson when he first came to Mulkeytown, IL. 

 

He was a member and past president of the Lions Club, a president of the Ministeral Association, a 32 degree Mason, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Cumberland Plateau Advisory Crime Commission, and a former member of the Rotary and Civitan Clubs.  He is a past president of the Tazewell District Unity (7 yrs in Tazewell) and has served on the State Board of Christian Churches of VA and GA.  He was elected Pastor Emeritus by the Richlands Christian Church, VA, and Elder Emeritus by the Cliffield Christian Church where he served as pastor for 5 years.  He was also a Shriner.  He also served at the White Oak Pond Christian Church, Richmond, KY and in  Walton, KY.  One of his great dreams was to establish a YMCA in Richlands, VA. but this did not come to pass. 

 

He suffered a severe heart attack on October 13, 1968. He had just walked out of the doctor’s office and had a heart attack on the curb. Was in the CVC Hospital. Due to poor health, he resigned his ministry on June 30, 1973.   He passed away on February 26, 1974 in Richmond, KY.  He is buried in the Richmond Cemetery, Madison Co., KY next to his wife, Thelma Marian Short who passed away on February 02, 1997. BIOGRAPHY OF THELMA MARIAN VAUGHN

 

Thelma Marian Short born August 28, 1909 in Mulkeytown, Franklin Co., IL.  She was the daughter of Stephen Alonzo Short and Dollie Mae Massey of Mulkeytown, IL (Franklin Co.) 

 

She graduated from the Christopher High School in 1929.  She was a schoolteacher and taught at Walton-Veron, KY school.  She received her college training at Southern Illinois Normal University in Carbondale, IL where she taught also and Eastern Kentucky State College (Eastern Kentucky University now) Richmond, Madison Co., KY, and the East Texas State College in Commerce, TX.  She served on the Christian Women's Fellowship State Board for 3 yrs., served one year as District Secretary of the East Central District of Christion Women's Fellowship, was First Vice-President of the 1965 State Convention of Georgia Christian Churches.

 

Thelma had many talents, one being in music.  She faithfully taught Sunday School at the many churches her husband, Charles Alexander Vaughn preached at.  Before her husband's death and before her passing, she taught Sunday School at the White Oak Pond Christian Church in Richmond, KY for over 25 years.  She dedicated her life to teaching others.

 

She had surgery on her stomach and it was so hard on her that she couldn't live her own anymore.  She spend 1 1/2 years in the nursing home before her passing.  Thelma passed away on Feb. 2, 1998 at the Kenwood Nursing Home in Richmond, Madison Co., KY at the age of 88.  She was loved by many and a grandmother and nurturer to all!
