Hurrah! I got my results!! ... eh, what do they mean?

So far, despite the small number of people tested, the Spearin Y-DNA Project has already been a great success. Seven of the first nine participants are identical on FTDNA's 25-marker panel. This establishes that all these people are very tightly related to each other and validates the suspicion that Spearin's originating from Ireland are indeed distant cousins. Furthermore, because documentary evidence has established (beyond reasonable doubt) a link between some of the current-day Spearin families and the Spering goldsmith's, all these people can be confident that their individual lines go back to London in the late 1500's (see The London Spering's section for more details).

For the subjects in the first cluster (Genetic Family 1, GF1), the next step will be to identify more families that are related to them. Given what we know about the London Spering's, we will also attempt to recruit subjects who are believed to have descended from relatives of the London Spering's, including Spearin families in Somerset (and surrounding areas). In addition, we will look to recruit Spearin's from the Low Countries (Belgium, Holland, Germany) as there is some evidence to suggest that this is where the Spearin's came from before they migrated to England (see the European Connections section). Positive matches from these areas would establish that the Irish branch of the Spearin's is related to English Spearin families, and would confirm a deeper connection that goes back to Northern Europe and into the 1400's and earlier.

For subjects in Genetic Families 2 and 3, we need to try to establish if these are from completely distinct Spearin families with an entirely different origin for their surname, or are they related to those in Genetic Family 1 but because of an NPE (Non-Paternity Event such as adoption, legal name change, illegitimacy, etc) the continuous line of Spearin Y-DNA was broken. And if it was broken, where did it occur.

Now let's take an in-depth view of the results and what they mean.
