Where & When ... Temporal & Geographic Distribution THE MANY FACES OF HARTWELL SPEARIN SPEARIN FAMILIES IDENTIFIED SO FAR Families by County Somerset Spearin families in Somerset can be divided into 12 broad groups based largely on geographical location (see below). The first appearance of a Spearin variant in Somerset is a Spiringe the Elder in 1530. He was a pallbearer for John Hakehac in Sarum Cathedral in Wells on 10th Feb 1530 (this would be 1531 in the Julian Calendar). Shortly thereafter, there appeared several Spiring families in and around Pitminster, starting with the marriage of Agnes Spiryng to Nicholas Bowerman in 1539 and continuing with various baptisms and marriages throughout the 1540's and beyond. In 1558, a William Spyring is mentioned in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills. He appears to have been from Chaynay (possibly near Backwell). By the 1560s, there were Spiringes in Pilton and West Harptree. These early appearances suggest that there were Spearins in Somerset at the same time as the goldsmiths George & Nicholas Speringe were in London. And this indicates that they are either two branches of the same family with a common ancestor before the 1530's, or alternatively they are two entirely separate families. The 12 broad groups are as follows:
Group 1 - East & West Harptree (this probably lies in the Poor Law Union [1] of Clutton) Group 2 - Pitminster, Buckland & Curry (PLU: Chard) Group 5 - Clevedon & Backwell (PLU: Bedminster) Group 6 - Bedminster & Bristol (PLU: Bedminster) Group 7 - Timsbury, Chelwood, Paulton, Marksbury, Farmborough, Littleton (PLU: Clutton, Wells) Group 8 - Midsomer Norton, Chilcompton, Clutton, Binegar (PLU: Clutton, Frome, Shepton Mallet) Group 9 - Lympsham, Loxton & Winscombe (PLU: Axbridge) Group 10 - Axbridge, Wells, Wedmore & Paulton (PLU: Axbridge, Wells, Clutton) Group 11 - Crewkerne (PLU: Chard) Group 12 - Bath & Weston (PLU: Bath)
