General Notes: Goodwin Killion was born between 1780 and 1790 in unknown. He died in Jan 1860 in Anderson Co, TX. The very FIRST piece of firm evidence produced so far for either Goodwin or Jane is their marriage license. It is dated August 9, 1808. It is recorded in Jefferson Co., TN Marriage Book 1792-1840 #755, page 76 under a file for "Goodwin Killion and Jane Sharp". The next "official" record known of is an 1813 petition he "signed" for Peter HOODENPYL who wanted to improve a certain wagon road which crossed the Cumberland Mountain from Bledsoe Co into White. Warren and other counties along the Kioky trace in Tennessee. The date of the petition is 28-3-1813. It can therefore be concluded that Goodwin and Jane were in Jefferson Co., TN in 1808 and that they were in one of the counties in TN listed above in 1813. According to the "History of Houston County" Goodwin was licensed to "exhort" (preach) in 1825 in Blount County, Alabama. The next "official" record appears to be the 1830 Blout Co., AL census. There are also land patents certificates of land purchases by Goodwin in Blount County in 1833, 1835 and 1838.

The first census information discovered on Goodwin is the 1830 Blount County, Alabama one. IT shows him between 50 and 60 in 1830 (or born 1770-1780). So far no 1840 census data has been discovered. Records indicate Goodwin left Alabama sometime in the 1830's. The next census information is the 1850 Nacogdochess Co., TX census. This indicates Goodwin is 59 in 1850 (or born about 1791). The 1860 Anderso Co., TX Mortality Schedule shows him as 78 at the time of his death on Jan 14, 1860 (or born in 1782). The Anderson Co., TX legal documents pertaining to his estate settlement is definate in Goodwin's death occurring "on or about the 1st day of January 1860" A copy of one obituary lists the date of death as February 14, 1860.

Still another consideration is Goodwin's age at marriage. The apparent custom back then was to secure parent's permission to marry if one was less than 18. Since nothing appears on the marriage papers to the contrary, it is assumed Goodwin was over 18 at the time of his marriage in Aug 1806.

It is unknown exactly how many children Goodwin and Jane had. The 1830 Blount Co., AL census shows that 10 children were in the household. It is known that John A. (a question at this point) and William were married and not is known household. of the 10 children listed in 1830, 4 cannot be accounted for. This report will continue with the records of the 8 known children plus one other that may eventually be proven. He was married to Jane THARP on 9 Aug 1808 in Jefferson Co., TN. Marriage record is contained in TN Marriage Book 1792-1840, #755, Pg 76.

General Notes: The following narrative was prepared by Perry Oscar "Buddy" Killion:

Jane THARP was born in 1784 in Tennessee. The exact parentage of Jane remains unproven. IT is however BELIEVED that she is a daughter of John who is part of a documented Tharp family. This family, which is believed to be at least one of the original immigrant "Tharp's" (Thomas born about 1640 in?). was first discovered in America in 1674 in Langford Bay in Kent Co., Maryland.

Interestingly the Tharps were recorded in legal documents as Tharp, Tharpe, Thorp, and Thorpe. Many of the Tharps migrated from Marylandd to Deleware, to Guilford or Rowan Co. (now Davidson Co.) North Carolina in the 1778=1790 timeframe, then on to Ohio and Indiania (in 1802-1805 time period). Many were Quakers. of REAL interest in this file is the fact that there was a John Tharp, born about 1756 (last son of John and Elizabeth Tharp) who moved to a place on Rich Fork Creek in Rowan (now Davidson) Co in the SW corner of NC and in the 1790 census was shown as with a wife (name unk), a female 16-25, a female 10-15, 1 male and 4 females under 10! Additionally, there were at least two with the name Andrew Tharp, one born in Deleware in 1755 and another in Rowan Co., N.C. born Mar 25, 1781. There was evidence of the name "Jane" used as a first or second name in earlier Tharp family members. Jane's headstone show Jane as dying at age 59 on March 3, 1843. If that is the case, she would have been born in 1784 (either two years younger than Goodwin.....assuming a birth date for him of 1782....or six years older than Goodwin if it is assumed he was born in 1790).

A Robert Tharp of Cincinnati, Ohio reportedly compiled the Sharp information reported herein.

There is no evidence that Jane had any other name other than simply "Jane". Her headstone is recorded as showing the initials "JNK" in one location. There are some family members who apparently believe her name to Jane Nancy and this may be how the initials JNK occured on her headstone. There is currently no other indication or record of a middle name. She died on 3 Mar 11843 in Fields Chapel Community, Anderson Co., TX. Althiugh it is unknown where Jane died it is assumed it was in Anderson County, TX. She was buried in Anderson Co., TX. There are 1972 photos of Jane's headstone as well as a large stone which someone has indicated as the burial site of Godwin. I have enclosed copies of these photos taken by Helen HO. "Ginger" Pearson on June 27, 1972.

Bobbie Lou Bridges copied the following article from a book listing the cemeteries of Anderson County, TX (Palestine Texas Public Library, Genealogy section) which is here quoted in part: 81, Killion Cemetery. The peaceful area where Jane (Tharp) and her husband, Goodwin, are buried would be hard to recognize as a cemetery if one were not specifically there for that purpose. On a knoll among large tress, with the wind gently blowing, you can understand why this lovely area was chosen.

Of interest is that the property where the burial sit is located is still in Killion hands. It is owned by Vogel Killiom, son of Homer Killion, son of Doremus Pulaski Killion, son of John Nelson Killion, son of John A. Kiooion.

Burial Notes: The place of John A's burial is a cemetery located just off Farm Road 323, near Alderbranch, near Ferguson Cemetery in Anderson County, Texas.

General Notes: John A. Killion was born on 7 Mar 1806 in White County, Tennessee. He died on 16 Oct 1895 in Fields Chapel Community, Anderson County, Texas. He was buried in Fulton Cemetery, Anderson County, Texas.

He is shown in some records as only Anderson Killion and as Anderson J. Killion.

In later life he used John Anderson Killion.

He was the oldest of all of the children of the household.

His dates of birth are March 7, 1806 on his headstone. May 7, 1896 in the John N. Killion Bible and March 17, 1806 in his obituary. It can be resonably assumed the birth date in the obituary information is incorrect, but there are still the two conflicting dates.

His place of birth is reportedly White County, Tennessee (no specific proof of his birth information though).

The marriage license for John A. and Nancy Moore was "witnessed" by Goodwin. On May 5 Anderson (under the Blout County Courthouse record file name of "Andrew"....those writing the court house may need to know this) and Goodwin both signed a marriage bond document for $200.00 (Blout Co., AL. 1824, Volume A,License 132, page 79). Neither Goodwin nor John A. could apparently write in these early days as they signed using their "mark". A Justice of Peace named Vestal Beeson is recorded as performing the ceremony. He was married to Nancy Moor on 6 May 1924 in Blout County, Alabama (Anderson Killian to Nancy Moor). The marriage was reportedly performed by Vestal Besson JP (Justice of Peace). The marriage is recorded in Book A page 79 of the Blout County, Alabama Marriage Book.

There exists a land patent of the purchase of 40.15 acres of land in Blout County, Alabama in the name of Anderson Killion. This document is dated September 10, 1838.

John A's headstone is still standing (as is Nancys) in a clearing in an overgrown area identified by some as Fulton cemetery.

JM Killian, 86 years old died Tuesday morning at the home of his son, John Killian, near Sylvan. He came there about a month ago from Hamilton County to make his home with his son, Rev. Charles F. Kiker of this city, who used to be the old man's pastor in Hamilton County, conducted the funeral at Valley Grove Cemetery, Wednesday. He said Mr. Killian had been worthy and consistant member of the Methodist church for seventy years (note even the Killian and Killion spelling situation).
