12 June 1945: At 11:00 AM reported to Draft Board at Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma in preparation for travel to the Oklahoma City Induction Station the next day. Returned home overnight.

13 June 1945: At 3:00 PM drafted and inducted into the United States Army, during World War II, at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Army serial number 38780498

14 June 1945: At 12:05 AM arrived (by bus) at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas and assigned to Company "A".

17 June 1945: Assigned to Company "B" and detailed to work in the Laundry and Taylor Shop. Kept records; other work was performed by German Prisoners of War.

4 July 1945: At 5:00 PM departed Camp Chaffee, Arkansas on a coal burning Troop Train.

6 July 1945: At 3:20 PM arrived at Camp Lee, Virginia adjoining Petersburg, Virginia. Assignments were......

15 August 1945: Received the Rifle Marksmanship medal

24 August 1945: Completed Basic Training and given two days pass

26 August 1945: Returned to Duty

29 August 1945: Assigned to Technical School (Mobile Laundry Operation) at Camp Lee, Virginia, 4th Platoon, 67th Company, 12th Battalion

10 September 1945: Received a Western Union telegram announcing the birth of my niece Sharon Elaine Nigh on 8 September 1945.

6 November 1945: Departed Camp Lee, Virginia on a commercial train for delay en route, furlough at home in Canute, Oklahoma, enroute to Camp Beale, California.

14 November 1945: While at home, Canute, Oklahoma, I went to Elk City, Oklahoma where I received my first authorization to drive an automobile. Operators License Number 11479, State of Oklahoma.

27 November 1945: Arrived at Camp Beale near Marysville, California, on a commercial train carrying one car of military troops. Assigned to Company "D", 4th Battalion.

9 December 1945: Departed Camp Beale, California on a troop train for Camp Myles-Standish.

14 December 1945: At Camp Myles-Standish near Taunton, Massachusetts I was assigned to 3rd Replacement Platoon.

2 January 1946: At 7:00 PM departed the United States from Boston Harbor aboard the Liberty Ship, Ex Chequer, a United States Troop Transport ship. Most of the noon and evening meals was sauerkraut. Mailing address APO 11942, c/o Postmaster. Duties aboard the ship was operating the mimeograph duplicating machine to produce the Ship's Newspaper. Experienced three days of heavy storm at sea.

10 January 1946: At 6:00 PM arrived at the Port of Le Harve, France. Transported to one of the cigarette camps. Camp Herbert Taryton, located on the cliff outside of Le Harve. Quartered in four man tents. Experienced heavy rain while there.

11 January 1946: Picked up on the Morning Report and assigned to Camp Herbert Taryton.

12 January 1946: Departed Camp Herbert Taryton aboard a box car on a narrow gauge railroad. Slept in shifts on duffel bags, ate "C" rations. Saw many campfires at night of displaced persons. Had children from those camps come to the door of box cars and ask for food, whenever we stopped. Train used peat coke for fuel.

13 January 1946: Arrived at Camp Leapold, near Namur, Belgium. Assigned to Barracks #2, in the 2nd Replacement Depot. The camp was a Belgium stable for horses converted into a military camp. Ate in a central mess area, consisted of cooked "K" rations and some dry "C" rations. Ate a delicious steak in Namur, Belgium, was horse meat. Visited the gambling Casino in Namur, Belgium however had little money (military script) so the stay there was for a very short time.

24 January 1946: Departed Camp Leapold on a troop train. Saw Calogne, Germany which was devastated. Near Calogne the train crept on an elevated temporary bridge. Saw the Rhine River which was almost not navigable due to the many sunken boats. Traveled by train from Calogne, Germany to Frankfurt (on the Maine) then to Marburg, Germany.

25 January 1946: Arrived at the 3rd Replacement Depot, near Marburg, Germany. Assigned to Barracks #2 the first night then to a five man tent.

28 January 1946: Arrived at the 56th Quartermaster Depot near Giessen, Germany. From the train Depot in Giessen to the 56th Quartermaster Depot one lane road had been cleared, for vehicle traffic, of the ruble of bombed out buildings. Assigned to the 560th Railhead Company. The 56th QM Depot was under 7th Army and later Headquarters 3rd Army and then Headquarters, European Theater.

2 February 1946: Reassigned to the 550th Quartermaster Group, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment at the 56th QM Depot. Duty assignment included S-1, Troops Division then the Morning Report Section. My supervisor was Captain Charles C. Dupuis. Address was 550th QM Group, Hq & Hq Detachment, APO 169, U. S. Army, c/o Postmaster, New York, NY. First pay was 311 1/4 Mark (script) = $31/10.

2 March 1946: Promoted from Private to Private First Class, paragraph 1, Special Order 11, Headquarters 550th QM Group.

18 March 1946: Promoted from Private First Class to Technician 5th Grade (T/5), paragraph 1, Special Order 13, 550th QM Group, effective date of promotion 16 March 1946.

22 April 1946: Furloughed to Switzerland. Tour included: Soultourn, Switzerland; Geneva, Switzerland; Lausanne, Switzerland; Vevey, Switzerland; Bern, Switzerland.

8 May 1946: Returned to the 56th QM Depot from furlough.

22 May 1946: Received military Motor Vehicle Operator's permit for driving a passenger car and a 14-3/4 ton cargo truck.

11 July 1946: Assigned to the 388th Station Hospital near Giessen, Germany with diphtheria.

13 July 1946: Teeth cleaned and teeth filled while in the hospital.

30 July 1946: Released from the hospital.

21 August 1946: Received smallpox vaccination.

24 August 1946: Two day pass to the Hillersbauch Rest Center in the Black Forest.

26 August 1946: Returned to duty.

12 September 1946: Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) changed from 104 to 405 per Morning Report, Headquarters 56th QM Depot.

24 September 1946: Paragraph 6, Special Order 221, Headquarters 56th QM Base Depot, scheduled my redeployment to Bramerhaven Staging Area, APO 872.

25 September 1946: Five day pass to the Hillersbauch Rest Center in the Black Forest.

30 September 1946: Returned to duty.

4 October 1946: At 11:35 PM departed Giessen, Germany by train in accordance with redeployment orders issued on 24th September 1946.

5 October 1946: at 1:20 PPM arrived at Bramerhaven Staging Area, Bramen, Germany. Assigned to Company 320. Departure for the United States delayed due to a Union Strike that prevented movement of ships.

9 October 1946: Received typhoid vaccination.

10 October 1946: At 1:30 PM aboard the United States Transport Ship "George Washington", departed Bramen, Germany. Stopped for one hour off of the "Cliffs of Dover", was not permitted to debark ship....only to take picture from aboard ship.

19 October 1946: At 11:00 AM arrived in the United States at a dock across and seaward of the Statue of Liberty.

19 October 1946: At 7:30 PM arrived at Camp Kilmer near New Brunswick, New Jersey.

23 October 1946: At 2:35 PM departed Camp Kilmer aboard a Troop Train, destination Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

26 October 1946: At 3:00 PM arrived at Fort Sam Houston, near San Antonio, Texas.

31 October 1946: At 11:00 AM departed Fort Sam Houston aboard a DC-3 airplane for a 410 mile flight to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Cost $22.60. Received an Honorable Discharge with 20 days of "Terminal Leave".

31 October 1946: Rode a bus from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to my home in Elk City, Oklahoma.

19 November 1946: Effective date of Honorable Discharge from the Army of the United States that was issued at the Separation Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Separation Authority: Convenience of the Government (RR-1-1 Demobilization) Army Regulation 615-365, 15 December 1944. Received the Army Occupation (Germany) ribbon and medal; Victory ribbon and medal; and 1 Overseas Service Bar.

***** UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE MILITARY SERVICE

I enlisted and served on active duty in the United States Naval Reserve while attending the University of Oklahoma at Norman, Oklahoma.

I transferred as an inactive duty Naval Reserve to Auburn, California.

17 May 1947: Released to inactive duty with the United States Naval Reserve as a Seaman 1st Class.

1 November 1947: Received a Certificate of Discharge Under Honorable Conditions from the United States Naval Service, District Staff Headquarters, 12th Naval District, San Francisco, California. Service number 230 73 46.
