Down Shaft to His Death
While Working at the East Brookside Shaft Adam Miller Plunges 764 feet to Bottom

One of the most horrible mine casualties that has ever happened in this vicinity, occurred at the new East Brookside shaft, near Tower City, which is still in process of construction. The accident happened at 3 o'clock yesterday morning and resulted in the instant death of Adam Miller of Johnstown, near Tower City, who is employed as topman at the shaft.

He was engaged in the pursuit of emptying the water bucket at the top of the shaft, when in some manner he lost his balance and fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 764 feet. His body was recovered in a horrible state, his skull having been crushed flat and the splintered bones protruding from his mangled form. At the bottom of the shaft a heavy floor of two inch planks had been constructed with an opening sufficiently large to admit of the lowering of the bucket into what is known as the sump, in order that it might be filled with water and hoisted to the surface. In his fall the unfortunate man's mangled body penetrated this flooring, which was composed of two inch planks, and fell into the water a few feet below.

The victim was 25 years of age and single. Deputy Coroner Dr. Phillips was notified and will hold an inquest. The terrible result of the accident can well be imagined when it is remembered that the unfortunate man fell a distance of over 200 feet greater than the height of the Washington Monument and that his body was falling at the velocity of 500 feet a second when it struck the bottom.

"History, Pottsville and Schuylkill County, Penna." by Joseph H. Zerbey, 1934, page 926.
Mt. Laffee is a mining village, situated in the western part of New Castle Township on the Duncott-Pottsville road. It was first settled in the year 1840. Among its first settlers were Tobey Hire, Robert Bradley, Mrs. Joyce and Mrs. Peck. Other settlers came at a later date, among them the Hancocks, Kirks, Lawlors, McAndrews, Doyles, Stevens and Haughneys. Mrs. Solomon Hancock, who was known as "Aunt Betsy", was famed throughout this section. She had the spirit of the pioneer and gave her service freely. Many men who were burned in the mines remember the service she gave them. When a miner was burned or injured in this territory, invariably a mule and buggy was sent for "Aunt Betsy", and she was always sure to respond. Another woman who gave valuable service this way was Mrs. Farrell Donnelly. The Donnelly home has been destroyed by the mines, but another building has been erected at the site of the old Hancock home. The descendants of "Aunt Betsy" are still living here.

"Schuylkill County Pennsylvania" by J.H. Beer's and Co., 1916, Volume II, page 638-639.
ABRAHAM CARL, deceased, was born in Schuylkill County, PA., a son of Philip Carl, also a resident of this county, whose useful life was rounded out within its confines. The children of Philip Carl were: Elizabeth, John, Daniel, Abraham, David and Samuel.

While still a boy Abraham Carl learned the shoemaker's trade, and he followed it for a few years, but later became a butcher, learning that calling at Fearnot, where he resided for a period. In 1874 he located at Tower City, and until 1881 was actively engaged in butchering. Then for a year he operated a farm in Porter township, and returning to Tower City embarked in a general merchandising business, which he continued for seven years. He built the well known "Carl House" at Tower City, and operated this hotel until within a year of his death, which occurred Jan. 30, 1898. His remains were interred at the Artz Church, near Sacramento, in Hubley township, Schuylkill county. For many years he was one of the well known men of this section, and his success in business through honorable methods proved an incentive to others to pursue a like course. He was one of the members of the Patriotic Order Sons of America.

Mr. Carl married (first) Catherine Schwalm, who died leaving one son, Fred M., who is now a butcher in Tower City. The second wife of Mr. Carl bore the maiden name of Ellen M. Shade, and she was a daughter of Jacob and Mary (Klinger) Shade. There were no children of this marriage, but Mrs. Carl has reared four belonging to others, one of whom Harry C. Kurtz, a son of Reuben Kurtz, has been with her since he was two years old. He is a plumber and tinsmith by trade, and is employed by Ira W. Hand at Reinerton, PA. Mrs. Carl still owns the "Carl House." Like the rest of the family she is a Lutheran, and her charities in conjunction with her church, in addition to those of a private nature, are many. She is beloved by all who know her, and those whom she has reared as her own rise up to call her blessed.

Schlack and Henning (1907)
DANDO, ISAAC, chief clerk to the weighmaster of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway Company at Cressona, was born at Shenandoah, Sch. Co, May 29, 1874, a son of Isaac and Margaret A. Fisher Dando. By strict attention to the work in hand and earnest and persistent labor he was from time to time promoted until he reached the position which he now holds. On June 26, 1897, Mr. Dando married Miss Mary J. Krommes, a daughter of Lawrence G. Krommes, of Cressona. Two children, a son and a daughter, have blessed this union. Their names are Lawrence G. and Blanche V. The family are all members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Cressona, of which Mr. Dando is secretary of the board of trustees. In politics he is a Republican, but has never become a candidate for office of public trust. Fraternally he is identified with the Free and Accepted Mason, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Independent Americans, and is an enthusiastic member of Cressona Fire Company No. 1. Mr. Dando is a young man of high standing in the community and is a recognized leader in social and commercial circles.
