** Historical footnote: In early September 2008, W. D. (Bill) Bostick exchanged the following information with Lynn Franklin and her husband, Bob Sweeney:

September 5, 2008
First, thank you for compiling the information on burials at Adas Israel in Brownsville, Tennessee. I knew that I had some distant "Felsenthal" cousins buried there, but I was excited to find a record for "Hettie Friedlob," the lone daughter of Julius Friedlob and Babette Felsenthal (there were six sons). I would like to add this information to my "Friedlob" files, with your permission.
I had earlier posted info on the Friedlob and Felsenthal buried at B'nai Israel, in Jackson, Tenn. The burial ground at Adas Israel pre-dates that at B'nai Israel, which likely explains why Hetty was separated from the other family members at Jackson.

I'm so glad that you found the information on Hettie Friedlob! That's the purpose of our work on this site, to help people find the information that they want. Please use it freely for any non-commercial purpose. Just please reference our site.
We're working on two cemeteries at the moment, Baron Hirsch in Memphis, and the one in Clarksdale, MS. Jackson is next on our list.
I found the article that you wrote for TNGenWeb families so interesting! Thank-you from some one who's not part of the family. How would you feel about a link from Hettie Friedlob on our site to this article? I think that anyone looking up information about her would really want to see your work.
Thanks for writing,
Lynn Franklin

Thank you for your efforts to make information available, and for replying to my request. Certainly, if my postings at the Madison County, Tennessee, Genweb site may be helpful to anyone, feel free to provide a link. By posting some information on the Felsenthals, a few kind souls have been able to contact me in an attempt to re-unite photos and other artifacts for that family ("Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness").
The Congregations at Adas Israel (Brownsville) and B'nai Israel (Jackson) are obviously linked by proximity, tradition and by several families (such as the numerous Felsenthals). Where were you able to find your information on Hetty -- Congregational records? I had not found that info on other listings for that cemetery. The current cemetery at B'nai Israel had been relocated to that site from a previous burial ground in the late 1890s; it was thought that the grave site of the Friedlob daughter was at the original site in Jackson, and not found or relocated. But her father was active in Jewish congregations at Brownsville and Memphis, and was a founder of the Jackson Congregation. So, in 1875, it is very reasonable that Hetty would be buried at Brownsville.
Records for B'nai Israel were sent to the Hebrew University of Cincinnati (HUC) several years ago. I visited HUC a few years back, trying to locate records for "my" Friedlob and Felsenthal family- such as the marriage and death dates for Hetty's parents - but with very little success. I was aware that they had a daughter who died iin infancy, but could find no futher information. Thus my pleasure at being able to complete my family records by identifying Hetty.

Some excerpts from other links of possible interest for the families that I am researching:

History of Jackson
Source: The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, Jackson, MS:

Jackson’s status as a regional railroad hub attracted a number of Jewish immigrants to settle in the town after the Civil War. According to one account, the first Jews to settle in Jackson were Julius Friedlob and J. Solomon, who lived in town by 1867. An immigrant from Poland, Friedlob arrived in Jackson on horseback from Memphis and opened J. Friedlob Dry Goods & Clothing Company. He was soon joined by several other Jews; by 1872, there were 21 Jewish merchants listed in the Jackson City Directory. One of these was Nathan Samuels, who owned the Pioneer Cigar Store. Later, Samuels owned a saloon, although he would annually sell the establishment to his bartender on the day before the high holidays, and then buy it back afterward so his business could remain open on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur without explicitly violating Jewish law.
.. Edward Felsenthal, a German Jewish immigrant, first settled in Brownsville, Tennessee in 1860. In 1883, he moved to Jackson and opened a grocery business. His daughter Celia married Jacob Felsenthal of Chicago, and both moved to Jackson in 1895 to take over the family business after Edward had died suddenly. Jacob Felsenthal built the wholesale grocery business into a thriving operation. He was a leader of the local Jewish community, serving as president of B’nai Israel. He also became active in civic affairs, serving as both an alderman and a member of the school board. Cecilia was involved with many different women’s organizations and charities. Though they had moved to Memphis in 1918, Cecilia and Jacob later gave the deed to their 12-acre vacation estate to the Jackson YMCA so it could be used for camping and picnics by social and religious groups.

History of Brownsville

The earliest Jewish settler in Brownsville (Tennessee) was Jacob Felsenthal, who came to the United States in 1840. He settled in Brownsville in 1847, opening a retail store. Jacob was the acorn from which the Brownsville Jewish community grew. He soon brought over four of his younger siblings from Bavaria. Two of his brothers fought for the Confederacy, serving in Nathan Bedford Forrest’s cavalry. One of them, Isaac Felsenthal, was killed at the Battle of Shiloh. Joseph Felsenthal began his life in America as a peddler, before joining his brother’s business. Jacob and Joseph remained in Brownsville during the Civil War and tried to keep the business afloat. They suffered economic privation along with the rest of the town. After the war, the Felsenthal Brothers contacted their creditors, and rather than asking for debt relief, requested additional credit to purchase merchandise. Correctly anticipating the economic boom of the New South, they were able to pay all of their debts within five years. Jacob Felsenthal became quite wealthy. In 1860, he owned $800 in real estate and $2300 in personal wealth. By 1870, he owned $8000 in real estate and $4000 in personal wealth. Joseph also became rich. Their store, J. Felsenthal and Brothers, was one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the state, and remained in its original location in downtown Brownsville until it closed in 1974.
In 1867, Brownsville’s growing Jewish community founded a congregation, Adas Israel. The group initially met in private homes, including that of Jacob Felsenthal and Joseph Sternberger. They also met in rooms above stores owned by the Anker and Rothschild families. Morton Felsenthal led services from 1936 to 1982.
