[15]
In May of June, 1776, Daniel enlisted at Farmington for 6 months
under Capt. Noadiah Hooker, of the Connecticut militia, whose company
was stationed at Skeenboro, now Whitehall, Hew York. In August, 1777,
in the alarm produced by the advance of Gen. Burgoyne from Canada, he
again volunteered to go to Saratoga to reinforce the northern army. He
served 2 months, from the middle of June, 1778, in the armory at
Hartford, CT., and in July or August, 1779, he was drafted for 2 months
and stationed at or in the vicinity of Horseneck, in the extreme
southwest corner of CT. On September 17, 1778, at Farmington, he
married Nancy Curtis, daughter of Major Pere Curtis and his wife, Ruth.
Nancy's father, a Revolutionary War soldier who had served as captain
in the 3rd battalion under Generals Spencer and Wooster in Rhode Island
and Connecticut in 1776-77, attained the rank of brigadier general. His
father was the first Keeper of Newgate Prison in Granby, CT., in 1780
and left in 1790 in failing health. Nancy had been born in Farmington
on Feb. 17, 1762. Her marriage to Daniel on Sept. 17, 1778 in
Farmington, was performed by the Rev. Timothy Pitlin. While Daniel and
Nancy were still in Farmington, two of their children were born, Titus
and Electra. On April 18, 1783, Daniel purchased two sites in
Barkhamstead (Pleasant Valley) CT.; one from Eleanan Phelps and the
other from Ruben Case. He sold the property a year later, on Oct. 28,
1784, to Uzriel Clark. The family moved to Tinmouth, Vermont. There,
relatives had preceded him as landowners. Thomas Newell and Isaac
Newell are listed among the grantees of the town of Tinmouth, chartered
Sept., 15, 1761. The Tinmouth town clerk's records disclose that on
Sept., 17, 1772, Isaac Newell, of Southington, CT. sold land to
Nehemiah Flors for five pounds, 15 shillings. The land had been
"formerly granted by the Governor of New Hampshier, I being one of the
original grantees in the charter." This Isaac was a cousin of
Daniel's. With his first wife, Rachel Pomeroy Newell, and his second
wife, Rhoda Warren Newell, he lived at Newell Corners in Southington.
Again on Dec. 10, 1772, Isaac Newell, Southington , for 20 pounds sold
to Abel Merriman and Samuel Culver land "in the township of Tinmouth in
the state of Vermont, I myself being the Original Grantee." The
document was witnessed on Jan. 7, 1783, by Isaac's wife, Rhoda and by
Sarah Warren. In 1788, a Joseph Newell sold property to Asa Eddy, and
during the ensuing thirty years consummated a number of land
transactions with many different people. Daniel moved to Tinmouth and
first purchased land there on Oct. 11, 1782. The site consisted of two
pieces of land, one of 68 acres and the other of 58 acres. His name on
the deed is spelled 'Newel'. On June 13, 1793, for 22 pounds, he sold
a parcel to John Woodbury, and on Nov. 2, 1793, he sold to Elias
Willard 30 acres for 33 pounds. While the family lived in Tinmouth,
Daniel was chosen captain of the artillery company until he left the
village for Burke. In Tinmouth 8 more children were born to Daniel and
Nancy: Ruth, Rufus, Truman, Ursula, Sylvia, Peter Curtis, Cynthia, and
Isaac Denison. The eldest of their children, Electra, apparently met
Isaac Denison, who , when he was about fifteen years old, had come to
Ludlow, Vermont with his father, Elisha Denison. Isaac Denison taught
everal winters. He married Electra Newell, and moved to Burke in the
spring of 1799. Capt. Newell had preceded his daughter and her husband
to Burke. On Oct. 9, 1799, he sold 70 acres of land in Tinmouth to
Tinas Allen for nine dollars, and on March 3, 1800, he purchased from
John Edgerton, of Cabbot, the original site of Sarah Fisk, which is on
West Hill (now called Gaskell Hill). Life there was full of hardships
and privations. There were no good roads and most of the travel was on
horseback. Religious sevices were held in the town house on the Green
near the cemetary, some four miles distant, and in private houses, and
the Newells were as constant as possible in their attendance. On Aug.
4, 1803, the last child, Selim, was born to Daniel and Nacy Curtis
Newell. Capt. Newell was chosen to fill various town offices, such as
justice of the peace, selectman, lister, etc., and is said to have
always discharged his duties with fidelity and dispatch. Writing in
1862, Dr. Selim N. Welch, of Burke Hollow, Vermont described Capt.
Newell as follows: In his religious sentiments, the Capt. was a
Baptist, and one who exemplified his religion by dispensing with a
liberal hand to the poor and needy, consoling the afflicted,
encouraging the faintheared; in short, by obeying the injunction "Do
unto others as ye would that others should do unto you." Possessed of
a kind heart and a large share of sociability, he was ever a welcome
guest in every circle, whether of old or yound, with the unostentatious
in all his acts, always one of the first to engage in any work whereby
the community might he benefited, without asking or expecting reward;
yet having his reward in the consciousness of fulfilling the design of
his creation and in the respect, confidence and love of his fellow man.
Perhaps no man ever lived in town who was more generally respected and
beloved. Physically, he was a fine specimen of manly beauty, being
above the common height, well proportioned and very straight. His
carriage was full of ease and dignity and his countenance but the
reflection of his heart." One of the Newell daughters, Electra, married
Isaac Denison at Tinmouth in 1798 and lived in Burke and on Dec. 22,
1824, Capt. Newell died in the home of this daughter and son-in-law.
His sons and son-in-law became active in building the Burke Meeting
House. A meeting of citizens was held on Apr. 2, 1825, with Daniel
Wellman moderator, and Isaac Denison, clerk. A committee reported as
to a site and George W. Dension, Dorothy Fisher, Isaac Denison and
Roman Fyler were appointed to plan and draft a constitution. The
constitution, reported and adopted the next week, provided that the
site should be on land owned by Roman Fyler, north of the mill raod and
west of George W. Dension's house. The use of the house was to be
equally divided between the four denominations ... Baptists,
Congregationalists, Universalitists and Methodists ... which joined in
the building; each was to occupy the house every fourth Sunday. Funds
were to be provided by selling shares to subscribers, based on the
number and valuation of the seats, or "slips". Each slip represented
one vote in the affairs of the Meeting House Company. The officers
chosen under the new constitution were; George W. Denison, chairman of
the committee, Baron N. Fyler, clerk, Titus Newell, treasurer, Ira
Walter, collector and Timothy Fisher, for the Congregationalists, Roman
Fyler for the Methodists, Sylvester Hall for the Universalists and
Isaac Dension for the Baptists. The plan provided for a house forty by
fifty-five feet, with sixty slips and a gallery for singers over the
lobby, or entrance. The sale of slips took place at the schoolhouse in
Burke Hollow on Apr. 26. Eager and excited contestants out-bid one
another to obtain choice slips. The notes of the subscribers were
taken payable "one third in good saleable neat cattle in the following
October or in merchantable grain the January after. The balance in
cattle in Oct., 1826, or grain in Jan., 1827, with interest." The total
amount raised by the sale was $1714.75. The highest bids were $40, the
lowest $17, the average $29.50. The building was completed in Aug.
1826. Lots were drawn to see which denomination would hold the first
service, and the Baptists won the draw. Daniel Newell's widow continued
to reside in Burke, where she died on Feb. 3, 1844. Both Daniel and
Nancy ae buried at Burke Green.
