This represents 41.5% of the female
population over 12 years of age. There is one 11 year old shown as
‘Farmer’s Daughter’, presumably helping on the farm. One 12 year old
is employed at home and another is a nurse maid. The majority of
working single women are 16 years or older. The oldest woman with an
occupation (excluding the 83 year old pauper) is an 81 year old
widow classed as a farmer.
Male Occupations
There are 524 men recorded with an occupation in the 1851
Staplehurst Census. The youngest ‘man’ recorded with an occupation
is David Berrsabah, 11 years old. David, along with his father (who
was born in Morocco), are staying at the Kings Head and are not full
time residents of Staplehurst. There are three 12 year olds and
five 13 year olds employed.
The oldest employee, ignoring the 89 year old on parochial relief,
is a farmer, William Beflin. However there is a 77 year old
Agricultural Labourer and a 79 year old gardener. Generally,
retirement was a luxury for the very few.
Agriculture
Agriculture is by far the largest
category of occupation reported in Staplehurst in 1851. The 43
farmers employed a total of 197 agricultural labourers which is
37.6% of the male working population. With the other occupations I
have grouped under agriculture, the total comes to 345 or 65.8% of
the population.
It is also worth noting that just under 70% of the unmarried males
work as agriculture labourers or farm servants / labourers.
