PETER3 HENKEL (UNKNOWN2, UNK1) (Source: Sue Buehler Ulrey.) was born January 1823 in Westphalia, Germany (Source: 1900 Census.), and died 1904 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He married (1) ELIZABETH LANEBATH (Source: Michigan Marriages 1851-1875, Internet.) May 13, 1851 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan (Source: Michigan Marriages 1851-1875, Internet.). Notes for PETER HENKEL: His name was Peter Henkel and he came from Germany in 1842. In 1855 he built the Detroit Commercial Mill on 32 acres on lower Woodward. Formerly a wholesale grocer, he formed a partnership with Mr. Voorhies. In 1865 he bought out Mr. Voorhies. In 1893 the business was called Commercial Milling Company and moved to Randolph and Woodward. He died in 1904. The 1870 Census shows he was quite wealthy, with $150,000. in real estate and property. Living with Ann Henkle age 63, he was 46. Also a Mary Hinkle and 2 Domestic Servents His son Robert (or sons?) continued the business. It was very successful. Robert and his wife Athena Yemans had grand homes in Grosse Pointe Park, MI and Belle Isle, FL. In 1927 a new mill was built on Atwater. Dec. 7, 1942 the mill was sold to International Milling Co (a MN company?). The flour produced was called Robin Hood flour. Notice the initials of Robin Hood are the same as Robert Henkel. I've been told that the Renissance Center in downtown Detroit is the approximate location of the former mill.--- Sue Ulrey Michigan 1870 Census Index Online 18 Records Found Last Name First Name County Township Page Henkel Albert Saint Joseph Burr Oak Vill. 17 Henkel Andrew Detroit, City Of Detroit Ward 5 215R Henkel Conrad Detroit, City Of Detroit Ward 6 426R Henkel Fredrick Calhoun Marshall Ward 3 718 Henkel Jacob Detroit, City Of Detroit Ward 7 48R Henkel John Berrien Niles Ward 2 295 Henkel John Detroit, City Of Detroit Ward 6 445 Henkel Peter Detroit, City Of Detroit Ward 9 265 Henkel Philip Detroit, City Of Detroit Ward 6 342 Name Business Name Occupation Location 1 Location 2 City State Year Peter Henkel; Robert Henkel Commercial Milling Company Pres; Mngr 47 Randolph Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Alfred Henkel P Henkel Co trav agent 248 Orleans Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Miss Augusta Henkel knitter boards 528 Calhoun Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Charles V Henkel painter 870 18th Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Conrad Henkel Keenan & Jahn uphlr boards 182 Adelaide Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Conrad Henkel laborer boards 54 17th Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Edward Henkel P Henkel Co secretary and treasurer 26 Alfred Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Frank Henkel clk boards 144 Maple Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Henry Henkel expressman 54 17th Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Henry Henkel, Jr teamster boards 54 17th Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Herman Henkel P Henkel Co clk 90 Miami avenue Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Reverend Hieronymus Henkel St Bonayenture's Church pastor n e corner Mt Elliott and St Paul avs Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Jacob Henkel laborer 528 Calhoun Detroit MI 1890, 1891 John Henkel gardener n w corner M C R R Belt Line and Mt Elliott avenue same Detroit MI 1890, 1891 John Henkel, Jr mounter boards John Henkel Detroit MI 1890, 1891 John H Henkel carpenter 588 St Antoine Detroit MI 1890, 1891 John H Henkel, Jr mach boards 588 St Antoine Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Julius F Henkel Commercial Milling Co bkkpr boards 706 Fort w Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Martha Henkel (widow John) boards 341 Clinton avenue Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Peter Henkel P Henkel Co pres 706 Fort w Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Philip Henkel tailor 18 John R 182 Adelaide Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Peter Henkel; Edward Henkel Henkel P Co pres; secretary and treasurer, wholesale grocers 132 Randolph, pork packers 49 Cadillac sq Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Robert Henkel P Henkel Co vice-pres 313 Jefferson avenue Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Waiter I Henkel trav agent boards 706 Fort w Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Wm Henkel finisher boards 54 17th Detroit MI 1890, 1891 Wm Henkel mounter boards John Henkel Detroit MI 1890, 1891 More About PETER HENKEL: Census 1: 1870, Mi, Wayne, Detroit, Ward 9, pg 113, line 13 - Roll 714-715-265 (Source: 1870 Census.)
