HAROLD JOSEPH3 WILKINSON (JOSEPH ALBERT2, ALBERT1) was born August 15, 1901 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, and died August 23, 1985 in Quincy, Algansee Township, Branch County, Michigan (Source: Obituary.). He married (1) RUTH ARLENE HERRICK June 22, 1929 in Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, daughter of SAMUEL HERRICK and EVA SPRING. He married (2) INA ECKERT STANSELL May 1976 in Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan. Notes for HAROLD JOSEPH WILKINSON: From the History of Branch County V1 1979 p507 Harold Joseph Wilkinson (1901) son of Joseph Albert Wilkinson and Mary (Steinbrecher) Wilkinson was born in Detroit. He graduated from Detroit's Western High School and then from the Horticulture Department of Michigan Agriciltural College in 1924. He married Ruth Herrick (1905-1972) in Detroit in 1929 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. During the Depression years he worked as a fire inspector for the Michigan Inspection Bureau and at Vickers, Inc. during the war years. Shortly before their marriage (1929) Harold and Ruth bought a farm in Branch County in partnership with Ruth's parents, Burt and Lena Herrick. The 180 acre farm located on Marble Lake is a place where Burt Herrick and camped and fished as a boy; it is now known as Orchard Beach Farm. This property became the week-end and summer retreat from the Big City for their three children, Marion (1930- ); Robert (1931- ); and Margaret (1935- ). A fifteen acre orchard was planted, a cottage built and the farm managed by tenants (C. Gottschalk, 1930-1935; Harley Mollenkopf 1935-1945; Bill Geiger 1950-1960). In 1952 Harold and Ruth moved permantly to the country and Harold was employed as a designer-draftsman at Quincy Products until he "retired" to fulltime farming and orchard work. Ruth did substitute teaching for the Coldwater Community Schools. Ruth died in a fire in 1972 which also destroyed the home on the lake they had built. For several years Harold made his home with his daughter's family, Jim and Marion Miller who also live on the farm, while he rebuilt his home. In 1976 he married Ina (Eckert) Stansell (1903- ) of Coldwater. Ruth and Harold's daughter, Marion (1930- ) graduated from Detroit's Cass Technical High School and Wayne State University with a degree in Librarianship. She married James A. Miller in 1951 in Detroit. Ruth and Harold's son Robert (Bob) had polio in 1940 and spent many months in a hospital "iron lung". He was only able to return home after Harold ingeniously designed and manufactured his own respirator using fifty-gallon drums and an air compressor. Bob recovered and graduated from Detroit's Cass Technical High School and Michigan State University where he got his PHD in Agricultural Engineering. He married Ellen Gruner (1935- ) of Branch County in 1958 and became an Agricultural Engineering professor at Michigan State University. Ruth and Harold's daughter Margaret wanted so much to attend high school in Coldwater that she lived with Judge Renshaw's family the year before her parents moved to Branch County so that she could have her senior year at Coldwater High School rather than at the big Detroit high school she had been attending. After her graduation she attended Maryville College in Tennessee and in 1958 married Philip Muir, who became a Presbyterian minister. - Marion Miller More About HAROLD JOSEPH WILKINSON: Burial: August 26, 1985, Oak Grove Cemetery, vol 3-91, sec B, lot 36, Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan - Death Certificate No.: 45814 (Source: Obituary.) Notes for PHILLIP HARRIS MUIR: The owners of Orchard Beach Farm -- Bob and Ellen Wilkinson and Phil and Margaret Muir -- have been coming to the festival as apple vendors for seven years. This week Phil Muir has been busy picking the 30 bushels of apples Orchard Beach Farm will offer at its booth near the library. Orchard Beach Farm is a family-owned and family-operated orchard. Margaret Muir said her father, Harold Wilkinson, started the orchard in the 1930s by planting 200 apple trees and 30 pear trees. Sour cherry trees grace the orchard as well. "He attended Michigan State University and was a horticulturist," Margaret said. Harold Wilkinson lived and worked in the Detroit area but came to Coldwater on weekends to tend his orchard on the shores of Marble Lake. The orchard trees are antiques, said Bob Wilkinson. They are larger than most trees planted today. The Wilkinsons and Muirs have three-legged ladders especially designed for orchards available for those who want to pick apples. Packaged apples also are available to customers. Margaret Muir has been busy this week washing apples to sell at the festival. Orchard Beach Farm is located at Fisher and Brocklebank roads on the south end of Marble Lake. The orchard is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. - Coldwater Enquirer Originally published Friday, September 19, 2003 More About PHILLIP HARRIS MUIR: Occupation: Presbyterian Minister (Source: History of Branch County Michigan V1 1979 p507.)
