Gila County, Arizona

The Ryden family came from Sweden, though the name was taken by Oliver at his choosing, and it is unknown why he chose it.  The Carson line came out of Illinois, to Oklahoma, to Arizona, settling in Gila County, in the towns of Miami and Globe.

Gene & Winnie Carson's Children

Eugene William Carson married Louise Winifred Ryden in his hometown of Globe, Arizona.  Gene was an accountant for the local coal mine.  Gene and Winnie had three sons in Arizona, and lived in Gila County, Arizona nearly all of their lives.  Photographs
 

  • Jon Douglas Carson: born 1939 in Arizona; married Margaret Elizabeth Gilmour from Ireland; had two children:  Sharon Evelyn and Shawn Eugene, in California; now divorced and living in California still.
  • Kit Paul Carson:  born 1942 in Arizona; went to ASU (Arizona State University) and graduate school in Ohio earning a degree in Chemical Engineering; married Barbara Ann Higgins in Arizona; had three daughters:  Stephanie Lynn, Tamara Paige, and Brandi Leigh; settled in Virginia; and worked and retired from DuPont.  Time now is spent in Virginia, and the log home in Maine (where Barbara's Higgins come from).
  • Philip Alan Carson:  born 1946 in Arizona.  Phil spends most of his time with bird dogs, Buck and Samantha, hunting quail.

    Albert Eugene Carson married Amanda Mae Henderson and they had five children.

    • Oliver & Bessie Ryden's Children


    Oliver and Bessie both immigrated to America from Sweden in their teens on their own.  Oliver was Olof Jonasson from Vislanda parish in Kronobergs län (county) which is part of the southern landskap (province) of Småland.  Bessie was probably named Beda Petersdotter, and she came from Filipstad (or Färnebo or Lungsunds parish) in Värmland län, which was further north.  The two supposedly met in Colorado where they married (not Leadville, so maybe Denver).  Oliver was a Mine Foreman, and he traveled extensively before finally settling the family in Miami, Gila County, Arizona.  Little contact was kept with the Swedish family they left behind.  Family stories say that Oliver ran away at age fourteen and that he was in Pennsylvania for a time with another Swedish relative before coming to Colorado.  Of the family that Winifred kept in touch with in the 1980s, all were Oliver's relatives.  Nothing seems to be know of Bessie except that her father might have been a cabinet maker, and it is believed that she had a sister, Anna.  Her Swedish family has not been uncovered as of yet.

    The family seems to have made it a tradition to change their names at marriage.  Many reversed their first and middle names (a common Swedish practice), and it appears some may have changed spellings and others adopting their nicknames as their legal names.  As the documents are uncovered, birth names will be listed.
     

  • Ethyle Olivia Ryden:  born 5 Nov 1897 in Velardeña, Durango, Mexico.  Ethyle married James Henry Terrell 5 Jul 1919 in Arizona; and they had three children:  James Henry Jr., John Oliver, and Bessie Alberta.  They settled in Louisiana.  Ethyle died 22 Feb 1951, probably in Shreveport, Caddo, Louisiana.
  • Kathleen Ida Ryden:  born 12 May 1899 in Denver, Colorado.  Kaddie married Eugene James Carroll 31 Aug 1921 in Miami, Gila, Arizona; and they had three children:  Eugene James Jr., Kathleen Lena (who did not live to adulthood), and Anita Louise.  They settled in Bell, Los Angeles, California.  She died there on 18 Mar 1984.  Kathleen apparently was very influential with the family.  Her oldest sister, Ethyle, and her mother both died in 1951, leaving her the oldest living family member.  The name Kathleen appears in almost every family line.
  • Lillian Edith Ryden:  born 27 Feb 1901 in Leadville, Lake, Colorado.  Her name is still unclear.  Records had her name as Lillian, and the 1920 census has her so, but I've also been told that her nickname of "Lillie" was due to physical appearance from the family's time in Mexico where she was like a white lily, and so she was called.  Social Security has her as Lillie officially, and her children wrote her as such.  Lillie married Murley D. Witt (Another difficult name.  Supposedly he was born "Samuel Merle Witt" after his maternal grandfather, but then he changed his name later in life.), probably in California, and they had three children there:  Lois Winifred (named after Louise Winifred), Leatrice Elaine, and Kenneth Donald.  Lillie divorced Murle and later married Hobart "Hobbie" Baughman.  She died 5 Feb 1978 in Globe, Gila, Arizona.
  • Norman Ryden:  born about 1902; he died of influenza in Mexico before 1912.
  • Ruth Ryden:  born 10 Sep 1904 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas.  Ruth married Lawrence Robert Graefe 7 Apr 1928 in Miami, Gila, Arizona.  She gave birth to a daughter who was named after her on 30 Dec 1929 in Miami and she died of complications five days later.  Bob Graefe remarried to Versa Kempton, and they had a daughter, Darlene.  Versa loved Ruthie and treated her as her own, to the extent that Ruth did not know the Rydens for much of her life.
  • Edna Christine Ryden:  born 24 Jul 1906 in Mexico.  Tiny married Karl J. Payne 21 Aug 1927 in Globe, Gila, Arizona; and they had two children:  Keith Edward and Karla Ruth.  Tiny died 24 Nov 1998 in Scottsdale, Maricopa, Arizona.
  • Edward Oliver Ryden:  born 12 Nov 1907 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas.  Buster married Nina Mae Seale; and they had two daughters:  Linda and Kathleen Ann.  Buster died 10 Mar 1987 in Miami, Gila, Arizona.
  • Lester Philip Ryden:  born 26 Mar 1913 in Gleeson, Cochise, Arizona.  Lester married Effie Alleen Bowen in 1933 and they had a daughter, Sydney Maureen.  They were divorced and Alleen remarried three times.  Lester remarried, to a Winifred.  He died 13 Feb 1971 on a golf course in Huntington Beach, Orange, California.
  • Louise Winifred Ryden:  born 4 Sep 1914 in Miami, Gila, Arizona.  Winnie married Eugene William Carson 11 Apr 1936 in Globe, Gila, Arizona.  She reversed her names when married.  She died on her 64th wedding anniversary in 2000 in Miami, Gila, Arizona.
  • Carl Cecil Ryden:  born 9 Mar 1917 in Miami, Gila, Arizona.  Cecil seems to have also reversed his names and changed the spelling of Carl to Karl.  He married Joyce Henrietta Cox; and they had three children:  Karl Hubert, William Dennis, and Janice Kathleen.  He died on 26 Sep 1991 in Los Angeles, California.

    John William Henderson married Emma Bass and they had nine children in Ada (or Hird), Oklahoma, though only five who lived to adulthood.
