Cole/Aden Line

North Carolina to Tennessee

Most of these southern families originated in Wake County, North Carolina and migrated to Benton and Gibson Counties, Tennessee.  The Aden's migrated all over the south, with groups staying in Benton and Henry Counties, Tennessee.  The Utley's and Cole's seemed to have had a good relationship and lived near each other in Wake County and then various parts of the families left for Tennessee and later intermarried.

James & Henrietta Cole's Children

James Monroe Cole married Henrietta Aden in Gibson County.  A lot is known about him.  He was a Confederate Veteran and filled out the questionairre for Confederate Veteran's of Tennessee.  He is buried in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetary in Trenton.  His family was found in the  1880 census.  There might have been more children after 1880.
 

  • Riley H. Cole:  born about 1867 in Gibson County, Tennessee.  Possibly left for Fort Worth, Tarrant, Texas.
  • Sidney Lemuel Cole:  born 26 Jun 1869 in Gibson County, Tennessee.
  • Charlie T. Cole:  born 1874 in Gibson County, Tennessee.  He married Maggie A. Dugger in 1896 and had children.  He married second, Mrs. Maggie Hailey in 1928.  He died in 1945.  C.T. and his first wife are buried in Oak Grove.
  • Jewell D. Cole:  born 1877 in Gibson County, Tennessee.  He married Mattie Killen in 1914 (Fannie K. on tombstone).  He died in 1950 and is buried in Humboldt.

    • Shade & Nancy Cole's Children

    Shadrick H. Cole married Nancy Goodwin in North Carolina and then travelled to Tennessee, settling in Gibson County.  Nancy, James Monroe, and Rufus and his wives are buried in Oak Grove Baptist Cemetary in Rows 4 and 9.

  • Sophronia Cole:  born 1839 Tennessee.
  • Emily Cole:  born 1842 Tennessee.
  • James Monroe Cole:  born 1844 Tennessee.
  • Rufus Henry Cole:  born 1847 Tennessee.  Rufus married Elizabeth J. Norman (1850-1873) in 1867.  He second married Sarah A. Norman (1856-1904).  He died in 1927.

    Ira H. Aden married Jane Utley and had at least two children.
     

  • Riley Baughman Aden:  born 1840 Benton County, Tennessee. He married Sarah Ann Yates and had two daughters in Kentucky.  He moved to Gibson County, Tennessee.
  • Henrietta Aden:  born 1842 Benton County, Tennessee.

    • Shadrack & Grandma Cole's Children


    Shadrack was one of the first families and probably is Shadrick's father, but this is not proven.  There were five Cole households in Wake Co., NC 1800 census:  Thomas, Loyd, John Sr., John Jr., and Shadrack.  In 1790 there was John and Thomas Coal and George and Shadrack Cole.  Three Cole wills have been found in Wake County.  John Cole lists his sons as Thomas, Loyd, John Jr., and Mark.  Henry Cole lists his sons as George, Martin, Henry, and Shadrack.  Martin and Henry left for Spartanburg, SC and George left no heirs in his will.  It appears that Shadrack must be the father of Shadrick H (Henry?), though there is the possibility of John Cole's descendants, but they did not seem to have the relationship that Shadrack did with the Utley's.

    Shadrack's oldest child was born 1790-4; three sons and two daughters were born 1790-1800.  Shadrack married again on 10 Feb 1824 in Wake County, North Carolina to Elizabeth Smith (born 1768 NC).  I'm guessing on Hinnant and S. M. because Hinnant was with an older Elizabeth Cole (Shadrack's second wife?), and S. M. Cole went to Gibson County, Tennessee but was born in NC.  I believe he travelled with Shadrick.

    Simeon Vanwinkle Aden married Jersey or New Jersey Williams and had a lot of children.  Jersey died in 1837.  Simon married Lydia Williams 4 June 1844 in Benton County, Tennessee.

    Able Utley married Elizabeth Hail in Wake County, North Carolina.  They migrated to Guilford County, North Carolina and to Humphreys, Tennessee and Benton, Tennessee with other Utley and Lashley family.
