Samuel Feldman married Pauline Schwartz 7 Sep 1940 in New York City.
Because of the death of her mother, Pauline did not wish to have a large
ceremony. They moved to Troy, New York and had two sons. They
later moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
For the longest time, all that was known of this family was that they came from Gutuma, Russia. All names were known and many were found on the SSDI. Then SS-5 cards were ordered, and of all of them, Max listed a city with his place of birth: "Zitomer." This is an oblast, Zhytomyr (Zhitomir more often in the US), in the guberniya of Volhynia in the country of Ukraine.
The data finally started to come in and the immigration dates of 1910 and 1912 listed in the 1920 census were incorrect! 1911 and 1913 were found in the Ellis Island records with the family coming from Zhitomir, Wolin, Russia (now Zhytomyr, Volhynia, Ukraine). Other family members were listed in these manifest records and through searching on the US census.
Rubin Feldman married Leah Galkin in Russia. They had six children
there. Rubin immigrated to New York City in 1911 to go with his sister's,
Anna, husband, Solomon Tucker (Suncel?) who lived at 50-52 E 3rd Street.
Leah and the four youngest children followed in August of 1913. The
oldest two, Izzy and Lena, came in Novemeber of 1913. They had two
more children in New York. Rubin was naturalized in 1919. In
1920 they lived on 55 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, except
for Lena, who was probably married at that time.
Saml Schwartz married Rose Augus Novick and they had one daughter.
In 1920 they lived at 3872 Third Avenue in Bronx, New York. It is
not known why they they did not have more children. Rose died 23
November 1936 of hypertensive cardiovascular disease and coronary thrombosis
which she has for 5.5 years, contributory causes were pulmonary oedema.
She was buried 24 November 936 in the Baron Hirsch Cemetey on Long Island.
Sam listed her parents as Schemerl & Pearl Augustoffsky and said she
was in NYC and USA for thirty years, which is not true, because she stayed
in Philadelphia for a time. Their residence at the time was in an
apartment house on 2764 Creston Avenue, just as Pauline had remembered.
Sam remarried to Fannie and moved to Florida. He died in 1974.
Unfortunately, this Zhytomyr Feldman family is unknown, only brothers
and sisters have appeared on documents at this time.
Unfortunately, this Zhytomyr Galkin family is unknown, only a brother
has appeared on documents at this time.
Not much is known of this family, but Grandpa Schwartz died, and
his wife remarried. Samuel did not get along with his step father
and he left Romania for America on his own. He had a step brother,
and they appeared to be similar in age, so this step brother was probably
not his mother's child, but this is unknown. This name was possibly
SFARTI in Romania. It looks like the family visited Sam at one point
in the early 1900s because there were quite a few photos of the family
taken in the Bronx, so if the step father's last name were known, it should
be in the Ellis Island database.
Stories from Pauline in her later years have been combined with
documentation. Unfortunately, new immigrants often did not understand
questions posed to them (and then placed in censuses or immigration papers)
or they did not want to tell the truth. This family was certainly
fleeing religious persecution in Europe.
The story told to me, and often names were repeated differently on occasion, was that Rose's oldest sister was Fannie Augus and she married Sam Novick in Bialystok, Poland and came to America bringing her posed as her child. Another time it was with the other three children and at one time the total was six! I never had a name for the sixth, so I think she misspoke. Now, I have found some of the children were incorrect, but it is good to have the names, because they might belong to a different family. All the oldest daughters were named after their mother, Pauline. Sam and Fannie Novick had Pauline, Nathan, Ida, Dora, and Phil. Pauline married a Goldman and had a son named Harold. Emma and Ezra Rosenfeld had Harry, Pauline, and Jeannette. Jeannette married Benjamin Spellman and had Rosalind, Bernadette, and Elaine. Liz and Harry Pinkowitz had Samuel, Murray, Pauline (b. 1916), and Irving. Harry and Minnie Novick had Robert and another son. They all went to Brooklyn and then all but Fannie's family moved to the Bronx. Rose died before Pauline was married. She seemed very certain of Pauline and Irving Pinkowitz.
USA Records: Samuel and Fannie Novick's family in Manhattan (no mention of that!) 1900, Saml and Rose Schwartz's family in the Bronx in 1920. Charles and Pauline Goldman's family in 1920. Pauline Novick Goldman's social security documentation has been found (listing birth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!!) Harry was found in the 1920 census as Harry Norick with Minnie and three boys, though Reuben was listed as Robert (what Pauline had said!).
Poland Records: Sam and Fannie Novick's marriage!
A wonderful breakthrough which gave me their TRUE name (though spelling
is irrelevant) and confirmation of Bialystok, Poland. Also possible
death certificates which list the names of Szmerel and Perel, both with
fathers named Icko. Birth record of Girsz in 1882 which is almost
certainly Harry. Also birth and death records of Szchana (1880-1881),
another sister.
