Anson-Chesterfield Genealogical Research

Anson County Estate Records
1805-1953

These original records are located at the Archives in Raleigh, NC. These records, divided into 54 file boxes, contain a great source of genealogical information. The year beside each name is the date when the estate was finally settled. Sometimes the estate was settled the year the person died and sometimes it would be several years before the estate was finally settled. In most cases a death date is included in the estate record. The name and residence of the surviving spouse is included. The names of children, their spouses and grandchildren and their place of residence are sometimes included. If the deceased was not married then the next of kin would be named and could list the parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

The estate record could include a list of the personal property owned at the time of death. The estimated value of each item. How much livestock was owned. The estimated value of the livestock. How many acres of land was owned and the value of that land. If the estate was settled before the Civil War then names and ages of slaves could be included. Some guardianship records are mixed in with the estate records. It is possible that some estate records are mixed in with the guardianship records. Estate and guardianship records go hand in hand.
This is just a brief description of what an estate record could contain. Good Luck and Happy Hunting !!!
