I am Kathleen Johnson-Stewart, daughter of Barbara Jean Caldwell, granddaughter of Fannie Rainey-Crockett, great granddaughter of Catherine Rainey, great great granddaughter of Isabelle Saunders, and great great great granddaughter of "Lizzie".
Lizzie was born about 1850 in South Carolina - parents are unknown.
She had one known child: Isabelle Saunders, born about 1868, also in South Carolina. Her father is not known.
Lizzie married Anderson Green.
Lizzie's daughter, Isabelle Saunders,married Florence "Moses" Rainey. They had two daughters: Fannie Rainey and Catherine Rainey.
Catherine Rainey had two children: William Rainey and a daughter whose name was also Fannie Rainey. The father is unknown.
Catherine Rainey married James Crockett who later adopted William and Fannie.
Fannie Rainey-Crockett married Benjamin Wesley Caldwell. They had four children: Barbara Jean, Juanita, Benjmain John and Robert Louis.
Barbara married William Thomas Johnson. They had one child: me.
Lizzie, my great great great grandmother, first appeared in the 1880 census for Chester County, South Carolina. She was living with Anderson Green. Lizzie was a housekeeper and Anderson was a farmer. Living with them were three children:Joseph Green, John Green, and Anderson Green, Jr. It is believed that these were step-children of Lizzie's. Isabelle was not listed. She later appeared in the 1900 census with her step-father Anderson.
Lizzie died between 1880-1900 in Chester, South Carolina. Anderson was listed in the 1900 census as a widower.
Isabelle, my great great grandmother, was the only known child of Lizzie. The father is unknown. She was born about 1868 in South Carolina.
She first appeared in the 1900 census for Chester County, South Carolina, living with her step-father Anderson Green. Her occupation was a cook. Her last name was listed as Sanders.
Anderson, who was listed as head of household, was a shokemaker. He was listed as a widower.
Living in the Green household was Moses Rainey, Isabelle's husband. His occupation was a fisherman. According to the census they were married 15 years which suggested that they got married around 1886. Isabelle, thought married, was going by the last name of Sanders.
Living with Anderson was Isabelle's two children: Catherine Rainey and Fannie Rainey. They both were attending school.
Also living with Anderson was Moses's mother Nancy. Her occupation was a washerwoman.
It is not known what happen to Nancy, Moses and Anderson. They were not listed in the census from 1910-1930.
Isabelle was listed in the 1910 census for Chester County, South Carolina, as the head of household. Her occupation was still a cook. She worked for a private family. Her last name was still listed as Sanders.
Living with Isabelle was her daughter Catherine and Catherine's two children: William Rainey and Fannie Rainey. Their father is unknown. Isabelle's other daughter: Fannie got married between 1900-1910. She was living down the street.
Between 1910-1911 Isabelle, Catherine, and her grandchildren (including her daughter and son-in-law) moved to Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina.
In December 1911 Catherine married James Crockett.
Isabelle was listed in the 1920 census for Forsyth County, North Carolina. She was living with Catherine and James. Her name was listed as Rainey and was listed as a widow.
Isabelle Rainey died on June 4, 1922. Her death certificate also listed her as a widow.
Fannie Rainey was born about 1885 in South Carolina, to Florence Rainey and Isabelle Saunders.
She was listed in the 1900 census for Chester County, South Carolina, living with her parents. She was 14 years old and attending school.
Fannie married Irwin/Irvin Champion. They lived three houses down from her mother.
They were listed in the 1910 census for Chester County. Fannie was a laundress for a private family and Irwin/Irvin was a cook in a restaurant. His name was spelled Irvin.
Between 1910-1911 Fannie and Irwin/Irvin moved to Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina.
In 1914 Martha Champion was born,and in 1916 James Champion was born.
Fannie and her family were listed in the 1920 census for Forsyth County. Fannie was a laborer in a cigarette factory. Irwin/Irvin was a machine operator in a cigarette factory. His named was spelled Irwin. Martha was 6 years old and attending school. James was 4.
In 1922 Catherine Champion was born.
It is not known what happened to Irwin/Irvin. Fannie remarried.
In March 1930 Fannie married Horrice Ballard.
They were listed in the 1930 census for Forsyth County, North Carolina. They had been married one month (census was dated April 12th). They were listed as the Ballot family.
Living with them were Martha and James. Martha, age 16,was a servant at the YWCA and James, was 14 and not attending school.
In October 1930 Martha married Charles Massey.
It is not known what happed to Horrice. Fannie remarried.
Fannie then married Collins Brown in 1945.
There is a marriage certificate to prove that they got married. But there is no record of them living together. There is no listing in the 1945 city directory in Winston-Salem. There was a listing of a Collins L. Brown and 2 listings of a Fannie Brown, but it is not known which one was Fannie.
It is not known what happened to Collins Brown.
Somewhere between 1945-1948 Fannie and her children moved to Washington, DC. In the 1948 city directory for Washington, DC, Fannie was listed as;Brown, Fannie (wid Horace) 1511 D se. In 1954 she was listed: Brown, Fanny B Mrs 1511 D se. In 1960 she was listed:Brown, Fannie (wid Horace) 1511 D se.
Catherine, my great grandmother, was born about 1888 in South Carolina to Florence Rainey and Isabelle Saunders. She was listed in the 1900 census for Chester County, South Carolina, living with her parents. She was 11 years old and attending school.
In 1903 her son, William Rainey was born and in 1907 her daughter, Fannie Rainey was born. Their father is unknown.
Between 1910-1911 she moved with her mother and children to Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina.
Catherine married James Crockett on December 26, 1911. He was born about 1868 in Richburg, South Carolina.
James adopted Catherine's two children.
Catherine and James were listed in the 1920 census for Forsyth County. James was working for a tobacco factory. Catherine was a laborer in a factory. William Crocket,age 13, was attending school and his occupation was a laborer in a factory. Fannie Crockett, age 10, was attending school.
Between 1922-1924 Catherine, James and her children moved to Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.
William marrried Leona Ratliff in 1924. Fannie married Benjamin Wesley Caldwell in 1930.
James and Catherine were listed in the 1930 census for Franklin County, Ohio. James was a laborer on a railroad and Catherine did housework for a private family.
Living with them was Catherine's niece, who name was also Catherine - Catherine Champion. She was 8 years old and attending school.
Catherine Crockett died June 23, 1934, at University Hospital. She was buried June 30, 1934 at Evergreen Cemetery.
James Crockett died April 27, 1948, at 209 Hamilton Ave. He was buried May 1, 1948 at Evergreen Cemetery.
William was born May 27, 1903 in Chester, South Carolina.
He was listed in the 1910 census for Chester County. He was 7 years old and not attending school. He was living with his grandmother: Isabelle, mother: Catherine and sister:Fannie. His name was listed as William Rainey. His father is unknown.
Between 1910-1911 he moved with his grandmother,mother, and sister to Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. They were listed in the 1920 census for Forsyth County. He was living with his step-father:James Crockett, mother, sister and grandmother. His name was listed as William Crockett. He had been attending school since September 1, 1919. His occupation was a laborer in a tobacco factory.
Between 1922-1924 he moved with his step-father, mother and sister to Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.
William married Leona Ratliff on October 6, 1924.
They lived with his mother and step-father at 928 Caldwell Ave., according to the Columbus City Directory.
William and Leona were not listed in the 1930 census for Franklin County, Ohio.
To this union were born five children:William Crockett, Jr, Thomas O'Dell Crockett, Albert Henry Crockett, Wilbert Lee Crockett, and Ruth Crockett.
Thomas married Joann Gay. They had five children:David, Thomas, Jr, Johnny, Judith and James.
Albert married Betty Carter. They had four children:Albert, Jr, Eric, Anamaria and Esther.
Wilbert married Joann Gilbert. They had five children:Sharon, Leann, Juanita, Lisa and Wilbert, Jr.
William Crockett, Sr died February 15, 1963 in Columbus, Ohio, at 1167 Atcheson St. He was buried February 19, 1963 at Eastlawn Cemetery.
Leona Crockett died June 4, 1972 in Columbus, Ohio at Grant Hospital. She was buried June 8, 1972 at Eastlawn Cemetery.
Fannie, my grandmother, was born September 26, 1907 in Chester, South Carolina. Her father is unknown.
She was listed in the 1910 census for Chester County, South Carolina. She was living with her grandmother: Isabelle Saunders, mother: Catherine Rainey, and brother: William Rainey.
Between 1910-1911 they moved to Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. She was around 3 or 4 years old.
Fannie was adopted by her step-father James Crockett, between 1911-1920.
She was listed in the 1920 census for Forsyth County with her mother, step-father, brother and grandmother. Her name was listed as Fannie Crockett. Fannie had been attending school since September 1, 1919 and could read and write.
After the death of her grandmother in 1922, Fannie, her brother, mother and step-father, moved to Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.
Fannie was not listed in the 1930 census for Franklin County with her mother and step-father.
She married Benjamin Wesley Caldwell, my grandfather on December 27, 1930. He was born April 23, 1905 in Concord, Pike County, Georgia to John Horace Caldwell and Lelia Nelson.
To this union were born four children:my mother, Barbara Jean Caldwell, Juanita Caldwell, Benjamin John Caldwell and Robert Louis Caldwell.
Barbara Jean married my father, William Thomas Johnson, son of William Earl Johnson and Lucy Bell Shaw. They had one child:me.
Benjamin John married Nancy Owens. They had one child:Glen Allen Caldwell. He married Deborah Yonne Crump. They had four children:Shanon Dewaine Caldwell, Shara Tiara Caldwell, Shana Noel Caldwell and Shawn Derik Caldwell.
Robert Louis married Sylvia Holmes. They had two children: Robert Louis Caldwell, Jr and Rhonda Denise Caldwell.
Benjamin Wesley Caldwell died July 5, 1980 at the residence of 400 St. Clair Ave. He was buried July 11, 1980 at Eastlawn Cemetery.
