SECOND GENERATION --STILSON/STILLSON(Jacob I,. Leonard G. 2) II. LEONARD G. STILSON/STILLSON, the son of Jacob and Miranda (Taylor) Stilson, was b. July 11, /821 per records of Frances Roland that list place of birth as probably Elk Crk. Twp., Erie Co., PA. (Another record had listed his birth as November 29, 1821). He died November 21,1903. Leonard m. 1) Sarah "Sally" Surprise at Cedar Creek, Lake County, Indiana on June 7, 1842. Sarah's parents were Peter and Rosana Surprise and they lived with their large family in Cedar Creek Twp. Sarah was b. in L 'Arcadia, Quebec, Canada in 1827. For more information on her family see History of Arcadia or the Encyclopedia of New Nova Scotia. She is listed as Sally Surprise on their marriage record. Leonard served in the Mexican War 1847-1848. Sarah died after 1870. Leonard m. 2) Elizabeth Roland on July 10, 1875 and again m. Elizabeth to establish pension record on January 30, 1898. Pension was granted after his death and she received it with son-in-law Henry Stoer, husband of her daughter Sarah Roland. Elizabeth died August 31, 1912. The 1850 census for Marshall Co. shows a Leonard aged 29 years and included children James H. aged 2 years born in Illinois and another son Charles A. born in Indiana aged 4 months. There is no listing for his wife Sarah in that census . The following is from the history of the Roland-Stilson Families by Frances Roland, written May 1991: Leonard volunteered on August 5, 1847 at Shawnee, La Salle County, Illinois to serve in the Mexican War. On December 29, 1847 rolls at Shawnee, Illinois show him in the Ist Illinois regiment. On Apri114, 1848 he was mustered in with a detail of recruits at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In June and August 1848 he was on duty at Las Vegas, New Mexico. In history, there was a three part campaign against Mexico, the 3rd being to hold New Mexico and California as retribution against Mexico for the military advancement against Texas, which had joined the US as a state in 1845. On September 20, 1848, while his company was returning East, and whilefording Big Cow Creek in central Kansas, Leonard's horse fell on his right leg, causing a compound fracture. On October 14, 1848 Leonard was honorably discharged with his company under Col New by at Alton, IL. (Madison County, north of St. Louis) and opposite the mouth of the Arkansas River. Their first son was born in 1848. In late 1848 Leonard's right leg was amputated in the poorhouse at Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana, his home country since the 1830's. It had to have been a trip of great suffering for Leonard, probably by wagon, all the way across half of Kansas, all of Missouri (although we can hope some of it may have been by barge down the Arkansas River and across the Mississippi River to Alton). Then he would have had to travel from Alton across Illinois to Crown Point, Indiana. On August 22, 1850 in the census shows the families of Leonard and brothers Charles A. and Calvin Riley all residing in West Creek Twp, Lake County, Indiana. In 1860 Leonard, Sally and four children were living in North Twp., Marshall County, Indiana. His brother Riley was nearby. Sarah's child was five days old and Riley's wife had a two day old child, per the actual census, the abstracts show their age as one month. Apparently neither child lived as none are shown alive later with this year of birth. His occupation was shinglemaker. In April 1861 the Civil War began. The family is not located in the 1870 census. In 1879 Leonard applied for a pension but was rejected until further records were found. When he re-applied for the pension his address was Scammons Ville, Cherokee County , Kansas. Several other members of his family had relocated to Scammon, Kansas in 1880. Documents on his application continued until 1880 and were renewed August of 1898. She was denied because there was no marriage record of his second wife Elizabeth, they reportedly married on July 10, 1875 in Joplin, MO. Elizabeth and Leonard were re-married on January 30, 1898. Leonard's physical description at the time of his induction into the military was height 5 feet 6 1/2 inches, his complexion fair, hair black, eyes blue. The portrait of Leonard shows him as having refined features, steady blue eyes and clean shaven except for a neat small rounded beard on his chin. No sideburns. His hair white. Leonard's second wife Elizabeth Roland Stillson had previously been married to William Roland. They moved to Polk County, MO and William died after 1871/72. About 1880Elizabeth's son Joseph Allen -Roland, married his stepsister, Leonard's daughter, Ollie or Olive Stilson. See photo of Leonard in Photo Album, supplied by Frances Rolland. 1. James H. b. 1848 in Illinois (perhaps mother Sally had traveled from Indiana to Illinois to join her husband, Leonard, or perhaps this was their home before and at the end of the war. In any case, they returned to live in Lake County, Indiana.) He Was two years of age and shown in the 1850 census for Lake Co., Indiana. Jim served in the Civil War in Indiana 1861-1865. In 1868, after his Civil War service he served six months in the Kansas Cavalry during an Indian disturbance. He lived in Indiana after living in Kansas 1868-1869. He was still living after 1900 in Oklahoma. His spouses are shown in records from Frances Roland as 1) Catherine (Cassie) and they possibly had a daughter Cathy that married -?Horton and he m. 2) Mrs. Abbie Lindsay. 2. Charles Andrew b. April 12, 1850 in Indiana. In 1850 census he resided at West Creek Twp., Lake Co., Indiana. He d. July 1, 1863, possibly in the Battle of Gettysburg, PA. 3. Julia b. 1852, possibly Lake Co., IN. Information from Frances Roland, no further information. 4. Ida b. 1852, probably Lake Co., IN. Information per Frances Roland. 5. Schyler b. about 1858, Indiana and is shown as 22 years of age in the 1880 census in Joplin, Jasper, MO. 6. Son b. 1860 7. Anna, b. May 1861. In the 1880 census she is 18 years old and living in Joplin, Missouri. She married a John Foster and they resided at Parson, Kansas. 8. Olive "Oliver Jim" or "Ollie" Stilson was b. February 22, 1864/5 at South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Named after Sarah 's brother Oliver Surprise and her own brother James Stilson who were both away at war at the time of her birth. Fearing one might be killed, Sarah planned to name "the new son " for both of them. However, the son arrived and proved to be a daughter, hence the name Olive. Ollie claimed into old age that she bore a boy's name, Oliver Jim. Ollie married at age 16 in Cherokee Co., Kansas on June 28, 1879 to A. S. Couch, whose signature is shown on an affidavit in Leonard 's pension file. Soon after she married her stepbrother Joseph Allen Roland and had nine children. Sarah "Sadie"Rolandb.
